Video of TV on Phones (on the Web)

Video of TV on Phones (on the Web) 06/07/2004 09:06 AM

dtb.jpg imageWireless Watch Japan has video of NHK's digital terrestrial TV broadcasting service on a prototype modified Hitachi W11H handset -- that means someone watching TV on their phone. It looks slick, too, although I must admit I was initially dubious. While most people would rather watch TV in a more comfortable setting, catching the morning news or last night's sitcom while waiting for the train wouldn't be so bad at all. The full WMV video is available to subscribers only, but their preview clip is long enough to give you the idea.

Today, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is: "Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025

Cisco Offers Some Poor Advice

Cisco Offers Some Poor Advice 01/19/2004 01:59 PM
The migration from current generation security methods to the future isn't smooth: While moving from WEP to WPA was easy enough, the upgrade to 802.11i in many cases will require new hardware. That presents a conundrum to businesses that may want to expand their networks but may not want to buy current generation products. Cisco's solution: don't plan on using 802.11i. A Cisco spokesman in this article recommends that in retail sales or warehouse environments where there isn't much worry about sniffing, users might consider not using 802.11i. On what planet is sniffing not a concern for retail or any location? Perhaps he missed the big news about the WLAN at a Lowe's store being broken into and customer credit card information being stolen. While it's not clear how much security that network used, it proves there's certainly a reason to secure retail WLANs. This story also looks at the break between Cisco and Microsoft that has resulted in two incompatible versions of PEAP....

Video Phones Won't Catch On Because
They'll Uncover Liars
01/22/2004 03:07 AM
Something of an odd prediction, suggesting that 3G video phones will never catch on because it will make it more difficult to lie about your location. I hadn't realized that so many people used their mobile phones as a way of lying about where they were. I would guess that there are plenty of other reasons why video phones might not catch on (perhaps, for the same reason that landline based video phones have never really caught on - people often feel uncomfortable knowing someone is watching them without being able to see them directly). I also wonder how many make their buying decisions based on their ability to use the technology to lie to people.
