Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Open Source release of Frontier?.

Wow - UserLand plans open-source release of Frontier kernel. The kernel includes things like the UserTalk script interpreter, all the UserTalk builtin functions, the Frontier ODB and the Frontier web server.

I don't expect that it will gather as many developers as the big open source scripting languages, but it would be a worthy addition to the community. It used to be cutting-edge, and the system still has a bunch of great ideas, despite having been surpassed in various areas (speed, reliability, debuggability, popularity) by other competitors. Enough to be worth saving, for sure.

Just off the top of my head, I can think of some interesting projects to do with the Frontier source:

- remove the dependency on the GUI, so it could be run as a Windows service on NT/2K/XP (as modern server software does).

- once that's done, a UNIX port might not be so hard. Presumably it's fairly portable already, as right now it runs on two different versions of Mac OS as well as Windows.

- perhaps after those two, or perhaps first, someone could rip out UserTalk and make a standalone interpreter, so you can use it the way you might use Perl or Python at the moment.

- this is a bit of a long shot, but if you could make the UserTalk interpreter support the Python module API or something similar, a whole bunch of open source libraries (DB access, etc) would suddenly be within reach.

Anyway, that's all for now. Announcements of open-source releases usually precede the actual releases by quite a while, so don't hold your breath. When this release actually happens, though, it will be a lot of fun :-)

[Second p0st]

OK - I'll say it.

Dave Winer and Frontier were my main introductions to the web, CMS, webapps, personal publishing and open standards.  Without Dave - I wouldn't be sitting here today.

I can remember Dave telling me about this guy Eric Raymond - and his Cathedral white paper.  It really pissed off Dave.  He had made his Frontier tool available - for free - in the early 90's and had had direct experience in dealing with people expecting a whole lot for free.  Yet Dave knew that by having a strong developer community behind him - that's all that mattered.

So Dave spent a few years trying to figure this all out.  He then made the decision that he HAD to charge for Frontier - or else he'd never get corporate uptake.  This is just as Linux and all the open source stuff was starting.

So now jump to years later.  Frontier is finally open source - but it's too late.  Php and python came along, Zope, Drupal - all sorts of stuff that does exactly what Frontier and..... well let me correct myself - not EXACTLY what Frontier does - as it STILL is a revolutionary IDE - as the integrated outliner makes o-o programming actually culpable.

But there are still problems with Frontier - memory leaks aside.  And it sure seems like it's five years too late.  That doesn't mean folks should'nt use it.  My buddy Paolo uses it for his eVectors knowledge management stuff.  Radio is built on top of Friontier and gives unprecedented extensibility that I'm sure many a MT user wishes they had.

I spent years pitching Frontier as the backend solution to our front-end needs.  Most people would look at me and say "Huh?"  But I'm proud of Dave and Frontier and I hope that LOTS of college kids give it a try!

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PM
Following Blockbuster's plan to drop late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the film, New Jersey came along and sued Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees" marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has given in and will pay up a fine, refund fees paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here. A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late. Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they were buying the video in question. In other words, people were getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly charged.

Late to the Panther party

Late to the Panther party 10/29/2003 04:59 PM

I know I'm late to the blogosphere release party for Panther, but I just got it last night and, biting the bullet, installed it with only minimal effort toward backing things up. I intend to eventually wipe this PowerBook completely and install fresh, but I couldn't wait. :)

Mark Pilgrim published the most definitive coverage of the beastie I've seen yet, with help of the denizens of #joiito to manage the onslaught of readers. So, I won't make any attempt to catalog the new things.

A few impressions though:

  • Everything feels faster. Windows slide around and resize like they've been waxed underneath. Things seem to launch faster.
  • A few small things have improved, like System Preferences quitting when I close the window, rather than hanging around waiting for me to open the window again or quit.
  • Some third-party extension I had installed threw Finder into a launch-and-crash loop for awhile. So, if you've yet to install, try to purge your system of extensions first. This should be obvious, but is sometimes a surprise when it's actually a problem.
  • Expose looked like a neat feature when I first heard of it. I fully expected it to be slow, stuttery, and 'cute' when I finally played with it. Now, having used it and slowly incorporating it into my usage habits, it's amazing. Smooth and not stuttery at all, it looks like a computer interface feature from the movies.
  • Fast user switching, where desktops rotate in and out of view, also looks like you wish it would, and seems like it's from the movies.
  • I hate metal.
  • I hate metal.
  • I hate metal.

That is all. For now. Maybe.

Right now the pictures are just junk shots from around the apartment as I trouble-shot many issues. And here's a weird one for those of you contemplating the Nokia 6600: I was unable to send my photos (as multimedia messages) to anyone until I'd first sent one to myself. Wha? Yup. That's what T-Mobile support told me. I said to the woman, "Well it's good I called. How on earth was I supposed to figure that out? Why's it like that?" And she said, "That's the way the system is designed." Of course that's the way the system's designed. [Insert requisite rant about retarded systems design here.] Aside from that, I'm psyched for more moblogging about town. Now I just need to get out of my bathrobe and actually go "about town."

Bit Late

In the late 90s there were stories every year about how e-commerce was growing -- but that companies were having trouble getting their shipments in on time. The FTC even cracked down and fined a bunch of retailers for, well, ruining Christmas. Every year, retailers insist that this year they'll get it right... and every year there are problems. Last year, the problem was with RedEnvelope who realized they were falling behind and had to spend all their leftover money (and then some) on expedited shipping. Amazon.com has always tried to position themselves as the leader in this area, but it looks like their UK branch is going to be the straggler this year. Due to a variety of mishaps, it looks like a lot of Amazon UK customers won't be getting their gifts on time this year. In some cases, it's particularly problematic. iPods that were ordered back in November aren't expected to ship until February. DVDs and books that some ordered are apparently just going out now, and aren't expected to be delivered until next week. Update: Amazon UK is now denying the story, saying that the only item they have had a problem with are the iPods.

I have always used some kind of database application to track tasks and to-dos (and sometimes billing when I've been consulting), from the first custom application I wrote in the 1980's in Paradox for DOS, to a Filemaker database in the early 1990's, to an Excel spreadsheet in the late 1990's. What application I use seems to have more to do with what platform I'm spending most of my time in than the inherent qualities of the application itself. Mostly, I want the application to stay out of the way and be as easy to use as a text file. These days, I'm spending a lot of time around web servers and have them running on all 4 of my computers, as well as at various data centers, and I am running a fair number of web applications locally on my laptops and desktops, like a Wiki, a family weblog and an RSS aggregator (Feed on Feeds). I still don't have the data synchronizing seamlessly between the different computers, but I'm getting closer. It seemed natural to try a web application to keep track of my task list for some projects I am working on, so I recently started using Alex King's brilliant little Tasks personal to-do application. I've fallen in love with it. As someone who has been part of designing several web applications, I know that doing good web application user interfaces is very hard. Tasks has one of the best web application user interfaces I have ever seen. King makes smart use of Javascript to enhance the functionality of the forms, and he uses small graphics to create a clean, uncluttered and highly functional look. It is very easy to enter, modify, re-arrange and view tasks. And, unlike lots of web applications, it seems to work well with a multiplicity of browsers. It is a well thought out, fast, lightweight server-based application. The only thing I don't like about it is that King picks font sizes that are too small for middle aged eyes -- luckily those are easy to change in the stylesheet. If you want to have access to your to-do list from anywhere, or if you are already running web apps locally, and if you are comfortable installing a PHP application on your webserver, I highly recommend Tasks, both the older donation requested version and the updated $30 one. King just seriously upgraded Tasks...
