Mandatory Free Wi-Fi in New Schlotzsky's
Mandatory Free Wi-Fi in New Schlotzsky's
01/16/2004 11:01 AMSchlotzsky's Delis require new franchises to install free Wi-Fi: This
story covers much old ground (and misstates T-Mobile monthly hotspot
fee as $40 when it's $20, $30, or $40), but it does note that
Schlotzsky's has extended free Wi-Fi to 40 stores. Initially, they had
it in just 10 corporate-owned stores. Also, new franchises are
required to roll out free computer access. Schlotzsky's approach
combines computers in the stores available for free use and free
Wi-Fi. The Schlotzsky's folks continue to cite a very small study they
did several months ago: She said a survey of Schlotzsky's patrons
indicated that six percent visited primarily for the Wi-Fi access.
(It's actually that they visited for computer or Wi-Fi use, not just
the free Wi-Fi.)...
Schlotzsky's Latest Numbers
Schlotzsky's Latest Numbers
02/18/2004 10:36 AMSchlotzsky's reports 40 percent of customers consider Wi-Fi and Web
browsing as factor in visiting: As the chain has expanded to 38
company-owned and franchise stores mostly in the South that offer
in-store free computer access and Wi-Fi, their latest market research
shows a significant uptick in awareness. The company reported that 40
percent of customers surveyed considered Wi-Fi and computer access a
factor in their decision to come to Schlotzsky's, while 6 percent said
Wi-Fi access alone was why they were there. Schlotzsky's a franchise
chain, so in order for the firm to expand this offering beyond
company-owned stores, it needed to convince franchise holders of the
financial efficacy of offering free access to computers and Wi-Fi in
the stores. These latest numbers seem to prove it. I've met the CEO
and the marketing director when I invited the CEO to speak at a panel
I moderated at Wi-Fi Planet last year, and the most interesting aspect
of the Wi-Fi is that they're not excited about the technology but its
uses. There's a financial aspect to this, of course: the average
purchase price of a Schlotzsky's customer is about $7. But the CEO
wasn't a geek; he liked seeing entire families or sports teams or
groups of parents and kids come in and spent time using the high-speed
connection. It's important to recall that a small but significant
minority of Internet users have broadband; for the rest, Schlotzsky's
offering is a profound (and free) pleasure....
Schlotzsky's Continues Their Free WiFi
Push
Schlotzsky's Continues Their Free WiFi
Push
02/18/2004 07:58 PMSchlotzsky's has been the poster child for putting free WiFi access in
their restaurants, and their latest announcement
continues to support that decision, as they say they've found
that 40% of their customers cite the free WiFi as a factor in deciding
to go to Schlotzsky's to eat, while 6% say it was the key factor.
While we've been a big fan of this model (offering free WiFi to get
more customers), 40% sounds like an awfully large number. Considering
the number of folks you see using free WiFi at many locations, even
here in Silicon Valley, I'd be amazed if 40% of all customers at
Schlotzsky's were aware of the WiFi, so I'm curious how they measured
this. In the meantime, this program has clearly been a success for
Schlotzsky's, and I'm surprised that other large chains haven't
followed with similar plans. It seems that too many of the for-fee
WiFi guys are running around telling these chains just how much direct
revenue they're going to get by becoming an ISP, and neglecting all
the potential indirect revenue from new guests (or guests who come
during off-peak hours).

More VoIP2P Offerings
More VoIP2P Offerings
07/27/2004 04:02 AMNot quite sure what the connection is between using file sharing
software and wanting some sort of VoIP connection, but following on
the announcement back in February that Streamcast was
teaming
up with i2 Telecom to offer a Morpheus branded VoIP system, comes
the news that
eDonke
y will offer a similar VoIP system, operated by VoiceGlo (amusing
aside: VoiceGlo, the company that is running the system for eDonkey
seems to now be hiding the fact they
once
were dot com insanity poster child TheGlobe.com). It's not at all
clear why users of any particular file sharing app need their very own
phone system, but it does (once again) highlight just how simple it's
becoming to turn any company into a phone company. With any number of
VoIP players out there willing to be the backend, it looks like it's
quite easy to become a virtual VoIP network operator. There are, of
course, already a large number of fully branded VoIP providers out
there, but how long will it be before the big brands get into the game
themselves? Would you get your telephone service from McDonald's or
Pepsi? Either one could just as easily set themselves up as a phone
company if they wanted. Meanwhile, Skype is working to make them all
completely irrelevant anyway by
finally launching their
ultra-cheap Skype Out offering that will let people call
traditional phone lines from their computer or PDA at rates that must
make traditional telcos weep.
