Microsoft No Longer Into Trustworthy
Computing By Any Name
05/05/2004 02:14 PMRemember a couple years ago when "Trustworthy Computing" was going to
be the major focus of Microsoft going forward? A few months later
they officially announced their plans for
Palladiu
m - which was designed to be their trustworthy computing platform.
The only problem was that the details scared quite a few people.
Following all those complaints, Microsoft tried to play down the
concept by renaming it to the impossible to remember
Next-Ge
neration Secure Computing Base guaranteeing that most average
folks would skip over any news article about it, assuming it was way
too techie for them to care. However, now, it turns out that
they've decided to kill the entire NGSCB program
altogether. They'll probably still use some of it in Longhorn,
but it's no longer a major initiative.

Trustworthy Computing and Tablet PCs. Microsoft also talked up its
forthcoming 'Phoenix' compiler (which it is using internally to build
Longhorn).

03/31/2005 07:01 PMThis paper discusses the Trustworthy Computing Security Development
Lifecycle (or SDL), a process that Microsoft has adopted for the
development of software that needs to withstand malicious attack. The
process encompasses the addition of a series of security-focused
activities and deliverables to each of the phases of Microsoft's
software development process. These activities and deliverables
include the development of threat models during software design, the
use of static analysis code-scanning tools during implementation, and
the conduct of code reviews and security testing during a focused
"security push". Before software subject to the SDL can be released,
it must undergo a Final Security Review by a team independent from its
development group. When compared to software that has not been subject
to the SDL, software that has undergone the SDL has experienced a
significantly reduced rate of external discovery of security
vulnerabilities. This paper describes the SDL and discusses experience
with its implementation across Microsoft software.

09/19/2004 09:05 PMAs a result of the ongoing success of the Microsoft® Government
Security Program (GSP) and positive feedback from governmental
entities, Microsoft Corp. today announced it will offer access to the

offering and the availability of Microsoft Office 2003 XML Reference
Schemas announced last year, the Government Shared Source License for
Office gives qualifying national governments and international
organizations access to source code and technical information about
Office 2003. The British government is one of the first to participate
in the program and gain the benefits of increased transparency and
interoperability of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office 2003
products.

Microsoft needs to consider a partial open source model for code
development if it hopes to survive the coming open source onslaught,
says Paul Nowak. That's why, he argues, the reported source code leak
of portions of the Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems today
"has the potential to be the best thing that ever happened to
Microsoft technically."
