Question.

A major trade journal enters the bias wars looking for answers. It wants to know: how liberal are the nation's newsrooms, really? "Liberal journalist" does not automatically mean that the news has a liberal slant. But if the goal is to gain ground in the bias wars, it's the opposite. Then liberal journalist does mean "news biased toward liberalism"-- automatically so.

Most of you have probably heard of craigslist, the San Francisco community web-board. Postings Delayed for a Bit Today I'm finishing up my first "On the Horizon" column for PHP Journal this morning so I'll be heads down writing until this afternoon. Being a columnist has been interesting so far. Responses have ranged from my partner (Cool) to my family (PHP what?) to the slight bit of credibility a writer has -- but Starbucks will not give you a discount. My first column is on the upcoming php 4.3 release which looks very, very nice. More later.

I didn't find a home page, a web site or a blog; I found an obituary. 34. Cancer. Rest in Peace Old Friend, Rest in Peace.

Judging Jobs Data By Internet Postings?

Judging Jobs Data By Internet Postings? 01/06/2005 05:24 PM
The government is going to release jobs data for December tomorrow, but Monster.com is trying to get a jump on things by saying that there were fewer job postings online last month. This does raise an interesting question. Do online job sites represent a good proxy for the overall job market? Even though many of the job boards tried to focus on luring blue collar workers to their sites, studies have shown that these efforts haven't been all that successful.

Judges Say Harlan Ellison Can Sue AOL
For Usenet Postings

Judges Say Harlan Ellison Can Sue AOL
For Usenet Postings
02/11/2004 03:58 AM
Nearly two years ago, I was surprised to find a legal decision I agreed with (they happen so rarely) where a judge had tosse d out author Harlan Ellison's lawsuit against AOL, saying that AOL, as a service provider, was not responsible for Usenet postings that contained Ellison's stories. Note, these stories weren't even on AOL - but on Usenet, available from just about every ISP out there. Ellison, though, has decided that it's not worth understanding the technology when you can just sue and because he could see the posts on AOL, it must be AOL's fault. Thus, he has contin ued fighting the case, to the point where he's spent almost all of his money on the lawsuit. He insists that this is all AOL's fault because it took them two weeks to respond to his request to block the Usenet posts in question. Unfortunately, it appears that my relief at a smart judicial ruling was premature. An appeals court has overturned the ruling and sent it back to the court, saying that AOL loses their DMCA liability protection because of the amount of time it took them to respond. In other words, DMCA protection against liability (one of the very few good things in the law) is limited by your response times to complaints. Ellison, continuing to miss the point, is declaring victory, but AOL is still confident they'll win the case anyway.
