Online Prayer Labyrinth This is an online translation of the Cathedral Labyrinth created by London alternative worship groups Grace, LOPE, and Epicentre. It is currently touring UK Cathedrals during 2001 - 2003. Youth For Christ are running/hosting the tour. The original is described as 'an interactive installation for spiritual journeys'. It consists of a pathway mapped out on the floor for visitors to follow. During this journey participants pause and listen to a piece of music and a meditation. They also undertake some symbolic action or ritual.

Art scene and heard

Art scene and heard 07/07/2004 11:11 AM
Located in an historical Long Island elementary school building, P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center has been a hub of avant-garde art and culture for nearly three decades. Now, P.S.1. also has an Internet radio station. As you might expect, WPS1 features an eclectic mix of programming. No Clear Channel station is going to give you the voice of Marcel Duchamp, the techno of Todd Sines, and a discussion with Taipei City mayor Ma Yingjiu about public art. From this week's schedule:
11:30 am The Bio-Blurb Show, Edition #3: Bio-Art or Bio-Terror? - In this most provocative program, host Suzanne Anker speaks with former Whitney Museum director David Ross, art journalist Stephen Henry Madoff, and filmmaker Virgil Wong about the federal government's Patriot-Act case against the activist artist Ste ve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble and the criminalization of the American artist in general. Must-hear listening!

12:00 noon Love Crazy, Edition #4 - Whazzup workaholics! For this session of her music series for WPS1, chanteuse Nora York zeroes in on how much we love our labors, especially when they're lost to song.

1:00 pm Curbside Cassette, Edition #3 - Okay, work's covered. How about school? Recent high-school grads Joe Ahearn and Max Kagan celebrate their diplomas with a science-and-math music mix. Indeed, where would we be without "Calculus Man"? Without the Beastie Boys, for one thing, joined here by Mos Def, Sun Ra, Elvis Costello, the Pixies, White Stripes and more.

A better 2004? A mixed look at what Indian and Chinese astrologers see for the new year. We're soon to move into the Chinese year of the monkey, a symbol of revolution, movement and changes... a year of more conflict and disharmony in international relationship but there are good chances of seeing new light and brighter future after struggles.
But on the brighter(ish) side, Stargazers agree that the coming 12 months cannot fare much worse than the seesaw ride that the world went through in 2003, dogged by war in Iraq, fluctuating financial markets and mysterious diseases.

I'm in a session on enterprise information integration. First up is Bob Glushko, who's talking about document engineering. He's writing a book, it's late, and here's why. Even though he used a comprehensive Microsoft Word stylesheet to ensure maximal control over the content, a lot of stuff didn't survive the transition to Quark. Crazy, huh? Here's a guy who's capable of writing directly in XML and transforming to HTML -- that's how he built the slideshow he's showing us -- and his book is stuck in a publishing bottleneck. In the short run this may be a Bob Glushko problem, but really, it's an MIT Press and Quark problem. ...

lluon_allinone.jpg imageI haven't heard a lot about these Lluon PCs -- and unfortunately their Korean-language site is in Flash, which breaks the 'fish -- but it looks like they're making some fairly attractive PCs and monitors, if shiny white plastic gets you going. The "All In One" in particular [pictured] is v. v. hot, even if proprietary, hard-to-fix machines in general aren't. Anyway, I submit them for your approval; no idea if they'll ever make it to the US. (Thanks, Lars!)

happy krishnas

« Krishnas on the Esplanadi. Shiny happy people. »

I always used to associate Krishnas with airports and vegetarian food. People smile, point and giggle at them as people dancing around and chanting might seem odd in places where dancing around and chanting are reserved for the drunks or the insane, but since living in Finland I've grown rather fond of them because they smile at everyone in a place where smiling at strangers just isn't done. People make fun of you if you're too happy and dancing and people think you're a freak if you're a cynical grump so it's no wonder most people take the stonefaced option.

It's going to be a crap week as, aside from all the other things getting me down, it is likely time to discuss the kevorkian option for HoneyBear with the vet. And, I'm one year older today, too. Yay. Maybe I should go join the Krishnas.
