Every now and then I find myself playing the Howard Beale (Peter
Finch) role in
Network, across from
Arthur Jensen (Ned Beatty), the capitalist visionary who explains how
things really work. At Digital ID World in 2002, it was Phil Becker
who
channeled
Arthur Jensen. During last week's
Gillmor
Gang show, it was Sun's Jonathan Schwartz. In the wake of JavaOne
I'd been thinking tactically about technical aspects of Java. For
Schwartz, though, it's all strategic and economic -- as in this
sermonette on
leasing
and net present value. I've thought a lot about subscription
businesses, and I've even
helped create
one, so I have a basic appreciation for the model. But I'm not
qualified to evaluate Schwartz's plans for turning Sun's various
assets into recurring revenue -- at least, not on financial terms.

06/29/2004 05:32 PMOn Tuesday, Sun Microsystems divulged more information about
NetBeans 4.0, an integrated
development environment (IDE) that offers the capacity to develop full
Java 2 applications, including Web services and Enterprise JavaBeans
support, and features a new Java technology performance profiler as
well as refactoring capabilities based on Dr. James Gosling's Jackpot
project. Gosling, Sun's Tools CTO, covered the new release during a
keynote he delivered for NetBeans Software Day, a NetBeans developers
gathering held during Sun's JavaOne Conference in San Francisco.
NetBeans 4.0 will be available at the end of July, but Sun has not
provided pricing nor system requirements yet. However, Sun does have
development builds of the open-source software ready for download from
its Web site.

reports that Simon Phipps is feeling persecuted. I saw the
Phipps post, too, but couldn't decide what to make of it. I've
had Phipps
direct similar allegations at me, in my opinion quite unfairly, so
I hesitate to judge this latest tizzy without hearing from any of the
others involved.
On the other hand, maybe Phipps wasn't so unfair with me. The
"how evil are you?" test tells me:

Go Simon or Please, Please, Please Ping
03/12/2003 10:29 AMGo Simon or Please, Please Ping
Simon just posted this:
Blogs I would read a lot more often if only they pinged weblogs.com when they updated:
Without pings, they languish at the bottom of my blogroll where I
won't notice or visit them. My blogroll is my only mechanism for
keeping track of the blogs that I read regularly - aggregators just
don't do it for me, and with tabbed browsing my blogroll is almost as
efficient for staying up to date.
It doesn't have to be weblogs.com - a ping to blo.gs would be just
as effective. [_Go
_]
Simon is definitely on point here at least from the
{InsertNewNameHere] perspective of my new RSS search engine. We
index in two ways but more frequently via monitoring www.weblogs.com. We'll
probably set up our own ping interface and hook to the blo.gs info if
we can but getting into weblogs.com just makes sense.

Simon Bolivar in Baghdad
Simon Bolivar in Baghdad
04/24/2004 06:28 PMReflections from
Hacienda Pensaqui, where Simon Bolivar was a guest several
times... El Libertador
described democracy as “a government so sublime that it might more
nearly benefit a republic of saints.” He simultaneously wrote to a friend that “our
[Latin] America can only be ruled through a well-managed shrewed
despotism.” Bolivar addded
“Do not adopt the best system of government but the one that is
most likely to succeed.”
Charles Darwin was
in some measure of agreement with Bolivar. In 1833 while in Argentina he wrote “[Paraguay]
will have to learn, like every other South American state, that a
republic cannot succeed, till it contains a certain body of men imbued
with the principles of justice and honor.”
One wonders what
Bolivar and Darwin would have done in Iraq.
