Security Hurdles Remain

Security Hurdles Remain 08/27/2004 01:30 PM
Security is getting better, but it's not there yet: That's the conclusion of this comprehensive Computerworld piece looking at the current state of WLAN security. While the approval of 802.11i is a major milestone, it's going to take time for users to implement it. Even then, network managers will still need to continually monitor their networks for weak links, something that many don't do today. Security will likely always dog Wi-Fi. The key will be continuously looking to potential future problems and the faster development of solutions that will solve those problems. But one expert in this article notes that companies aren't deciding against Wi-Fi because of security concerns, at least not as often as they used to. That statement is backed up by research that emerged recently that found that mainstream companies, not just niche industries, are increasingly choosing to use WLAN switches, which often tout their strong security capabilities....

Security

Problems With Current Thoughts On
Security
11/04/2003 02:28 PM
We've already had one story today suggesting that we need to think about computer security using a different metaphor, and consider it more similar to an airport (all access, but with security measures) than a fortress (not letting anyone in). Here are two more articles suggesting that the way we currently think about security issues is flawed. ZoneLab's CEO is complaining about the problems we have in being reactive to security issues rather than proactive. Of course, a lot of his argument can be read as a pitch for his company's security software. Meanwhile, a report from the RSA Security Conference suggests that hiring reformed malicious hackers isn't a very good idea. This isn't due to ethical issues, but the simple fact that most people breaking into computer systems really aren't that good. They say that breaking into a system requires many fewer skills than protecting a system. Furthermore, as someone points out, hiring someone with a criminal record for hacking means that they actually got caught doing something wrong - suggesting they weren't even very good at breaking in to systems.

Peter Lewis of Fortune went snooping with STSN's chief technology officer and found how easy it would be to break into computers of hotel guests: The story is a bit of a plug for STSN which touts the strong security mechanisms on networks it builds for hotels but the story demonstrates that hotels don't always employ the most rigid security on their Wi-Fi networks. The moral as always is protect yourself and make sure you know how secure your network is if you're planning to transmit anything sensitive....

01/06/2004 10:41 AM
Many I.T. people are simply fed-up with the constant stream of never ending security problems using Microsoft's Windows products, adding myself to an ever-growing list of frustrated computer professionals. Upon returning from a ten-day vacation, and a single security patch behind, seven out of eleven servers attached to a remote DSL network were taken over by intruders. Granted I should have had a firewall in front of these computers, but because of their functionality, I didn't justify the expense. But still, am I to blame or should Microsoft be held accountable?

Frontier Hopping Doesn't Solve Security
Problems

Frontier Hopping Doesn't Solve Security
Problems
11/06/2003 02:42 PM
A great article from Simson Garfinkel talking about the technology world's "Frontier Syndrome". He points out that each time security/virus/spam/whatever problems get too big in the technology world, along comes a new technology that promises to be more secure than the old technology, and everyone jumps on board. At first, it works out great, because there's just a small number of folks who are getting used to the rough edges of living out on the frontier. But, then more people arrive, and with them come the folks who caused the original problems - and it just takes them a little while to figure out where the new holes are. As he says, "the real reason that new computing platforms are usually more secure than old ones is that nobody has written attack programs for them yet."
