Rishab writes: I've prepared a table comparing the $560 cost of a single windows + office licence to GDP/capita for 176 countries and some geographical aggregates. In India, GDP/capita is $462 so the licence cost of windows is 14.5 months of average income, translated into US terms that's $42725. Not surprisingly, the higher this effective cost, the higher the BSA-estimated piracy rate. Read all about it....

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PM
Following Blockbuster's plan to drop late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the film, New Jersey came along and sued Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees" marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has given in and will pay up a fine, refund fees paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here. A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late. Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they were buying the video in question. In other words, people were getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly charged.

Just What Are Carriers Doing With
Federal Recovery Fees?

Just What Are Carriers Doing With
Federal Recovery Fees?
04/13/2004 02:10 PM
Last year we wrote about the increasing practice of stealth inflation on telecom bills, where the telecom company would hide rate increases by adding official looking fees such as the "federal recovery fee" that look as though they're required by the government, when the truth is anything but that. Now, found over at Broadband Reports, comes the news that a consumer advocacy group is asking the FCC to take a more active role in regulating those fees. For example, they point out that nearly a billion dollars has been collected in fees related to number portability, but there's no data on what that's being used for, or even how many people have benefited from number portability. The group isn't objecting to the fees completely, but believes that the wireless carriers should be more open about what they're collecting these fees for, and how the money is actually being put to use.

Adding Fees To Social Networks

Adding Fees To Social Networks 01/27/2004 02:24 AM
Okay, take an idea that's being done to death all over the internet for free - with new (sometimes deep pocketed) players showing up every day. Then, wait until the market is so saturated that most people are already getting sick of the idea... and then try to charge for it. That appears to be the plan of Tickle (formerly eMode) that is now going to try to start charging for some aspects of their "social network" Friendster-clone. Since they know they're the first, and they must know they're going to face backlash, they're only charging if you want to contact someone who is separated by more than four degrees from you - at which point, I wonder what the point of social networking is? If the idea is to meet friends of friends because they might have similar interests, what's the value in using such a system to meet a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend? Isn't that just a stranger? There are lots of ways to meet strangers online that don't cost money.
