CMS's Should Manage Content, Not Display It

CMS's Should Manage Content, Not Display
It

CMS's Should Manage Content, Not Display
It
02/18/2004 02:46 PM

I don't like content management systems that try to handle the displaying of content. I alluded to this last year, when I wrote:

There are two sides to publishing Web content: First you create the content, store it, edit it, send it through workflow, get it approved, then stage it somewhere until it's published. Second, you display the content on a Web page. The first is infinitely more complex than the second.

This still holds true. Managing the content is the tricky part, publishing it is easy. Any Web developer worth his or her paycheck can spin a recordset and write out some HTML. Which leads me back to my point...

Content management systems that have a display component end up trying to replicate one of the dozens of Web programming languages out there, and they do an inferior job of it. ASP, ColdFusion, PHP — these languages have a big programmer base. I don't care how much thought you put into it, your proprietary CMS templating language is going to come up short.

I'm working with an open-source content management system now that's first-rate. However, a big part of it is the display component. It has its own templating langauge, its own URL format, etc.

There are some problems with this. (1) It's very, very slow; (2) the language is inferior compared to any Web programming language; (3) I like my URLs a specific way and I need to maintain URL consistency; and finally (4) I don't want to learn yet another language.

My solution was to write a function library to make raw database calls to get everything out in a nice, big, nested PHP array. I essentially built an API for the CMS to make pulling content easy, but I do all the HTML processing in PHP, abandoning completely the display side of this CMS. I still use it for administration, workflow, etc. (which it excels at), but when PHP is such a fantastic, mature language, why reinvent the wheel?

Some people may claim that templating languages are made for non-programmers to use, but they often end up being just as complex as a real programming language. As the language develops, you find that you need to add this function and that control struture until, in the end, you've essentially re-written any other language.

And if you just give the developers a decent API for getting the data out, most of the heavy-lifting is done. Code to format text, numbers, dates, do some simple if / thens, etc. — this isn't hard and can be abstracted to easily-digestible function calls.

(Also, the sad fact is that sometimes the displaying of content is, in fact, complicated. Especially when you get into things like personalization. We may just have to live with the fact that the logic to display some content is beyond the scope of a non-programmer.)

CMS vendors: handle all the adminstration of the content, then just publish it to a database and give us a solid API for getting the content into a data construct in the language of our choice. We'll handle it from there.

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PM
Major League Baseball made news last year for claim ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content provider paying a huge upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course, the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans, which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to pick up new fans.

Why Does The FBI Let Someone Else Manage
Their Email?
02/05/2005 09:48 PM
Just a month or so after it was revealed that a hacker had access to Secre t Service emails because at least one agent was doing email from a T-Mobile Sidekick, comes the news that the FBI is shutting down an email system for fear that it's been hacked into. Of course, you shouldn't worry, because this isn't there really important email system, this one is just for... um... show. That is, it's the email system they use when they communicate with the riffraff, rather than for all their secret stuff that they keep separate. Of course, it still makes you wonder why the FBI would contract out management of their email system (even the one for communicating with lowly outsiders) to an outside company? You would think that's the sort of thing that they might want to have control over themselves.

One way to manage your email overload...

One way to manage your email overload... 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
...is to simply make it someone else's problem. Here's the Out Of Office -message from a colleague:

Thank-you for your recent email.

Your message has been deleted from CutBoy's inbox, and all trace of it removed from our server. He has no way of knowing the message even existed.

So, if you still think that he will find the contents of your mail important you are welcome to re-mail at a future date at your convienience.

Sincerely,

Mail assistant to CB

I love it - resending the email when you even don't know when the person is back causes a significant cognitive load to the person sending it. Therefore, only the really important messages will be resent, and thus, the problem of filtering out the good email from the bad is distributed to the senders. Whee, practical applications of distributed computing using human brains :-)

Manage eBay via Office

Manage eBay via Office 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

Microsoft, eBay hook up software and auction data: Not a bad idea, I suppose.

Developers can tap into eBay's data and offer them directly to Microsoft's programs, such as Excel and FrontPage, without having to go through a Web browser.

Under the joint effort between Microsoft and Ebay, both companies will provide software that will allow developers to use Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet program, one of the components of Office, to upload information on items for sale, track ongoing auctions and collect historical data.

Wouldn't Access be a better choice than Excel? Then again, I suppose the user base isn't nearly as large.

Best way to manage a personal mailing

Best way to manage a personal mailing
list?
09/12/2004 04:33 PM

For many years I've been inviting a group of friends over to brunch and/or wine/cheese via a personal mailing list.  This is just a text file of the form

bcc: foo@bar.com
bcc: yow@baz.org
bcc: student@veryrich.edu

I prepare an email message in Emacs, to: philg, and then insert all of these bcc: headers.  This then gets sent to a mailer at MIT and off to the world.  Worked great in the mid-1990s before spam made the Internet the time-waster that it has become.  Now many of my friends don't get the email at all.  Hotmail, for example, when it sees something to: philg@mit.edu, bcc: happy_user@hotmail.com, sends it straight to the junk mail folder.

The challenge now is the best way to divide this up so that 100 individual emails are sent, each one from: philg, to: person_on_list.  One answer would be to write a Perl script on the Unix machine.  It would take two arguments, one the filename of a message and the other a filename with one email address on every line.  The Perl script would look through the email addresses and send out an email on my behalf.  (Anyone know where to get a script that does this already?; I checked cpan.)

Unix boxes typically have list managers such as Majordomo installed but as best as I can recall the email from these programs usually has a bulk look and feel, being sent to "fish-lovers-list" instead of the recipient.  I'm thinking that these are likely to be trapped by spam filters as well.

Another answer would seem to be Microsoft Outlook.  I switched to Outlook a couple of years ago when I got a Handspring Treo.  So why not just add every brunch guest to my Outlook contacts folder and somehow spam them from my desktop machine?  This has the advantage that I'm only keeping one database of contacts.  This has the disadvantage that it doesn't work when on the road.  The regular Outlook distribution list mechanism produces an email with multiple To: recipients, which I don't want to do because when people reply they often unintentionally reply to the entire list (in this case about 100 people).  Are there VB scripts out there that will force Outlook to send one email at a time to each person on a distribution list?  It seems as though there is a product, http://www.mapi lab.com/outlook/send_personally/, that claims to do the job.

Finally there are Web services such as Evite.  I don't really need a count of who is going to come.  These tend to more drop-in sorts of events so Evite is rather too heavy-handed.  Also Evite, I think, subjects users to banner advertisements and I'm not sure that I want to surrender control of my database to them.

Thoughts?  Scripts?  Recommendations?

Rails is the system David developed to power BaseCamp, the 37 Signals project management app. David had previously released Active Record, his O-R mapping layer for Rails, which is the slickest method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what his MVC implementation looks like.

We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have been employees of Microsoft or Sun.

'Stunned' Apple rails against Real's
iPod move
07/29/2004 09:42 AM
Apple Computer on Thursday issued a scathing response to RealNetworks' move to unlock Apple's proprietary technology and make it possible for people to listen to music in RealNetworks' digital file format on iPod devices.

In a terse statement, a "stunned" Apple accused RealNetworks of adopting "the tactics and ethics of a hacker" with the release of its Harmony software, which allows songs sold via its online store to be played on a variety of portable devices, including Apple's iPod and Microsoft-compatible rivals. Apple threatened to block access to the iPod using Harmony the next time it updates the software used to run the device. The company last week unveiled the fourth generation of the trend-setting music player.

"It is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will cease to work with current and future iPods," the company said in its statement. In addition, Apple said that it is investigating the implications of Real's software strategy under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and other laws. The DMCA broadly restricts the bypassing of copy-protection technologies used in DVDs and in some music CDs and software programs.

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login 06/08/2004 12:31 PM
Pronto Networks introduces USB key to allow secure login without passwords: Pronto's Internet Key lets a user plug in this small device into a USB port to authenticate themselves over a Pronto-based network. The release doesn't mention what software is required to use the system, which was co-developed with Sweet Spot Solutions. While this is an idea that's been churning for a while--Microsoft is working on something of this sort, for instance--it's problematic when it's a single-vendor solution. Think about the grocery store affinity programs: how many cards do you have to carry to get the best price if a single store isn't convenient to you? My mother-in-law has a dangly array of those, which are capable of being managed, but not ideal. So, too, would a USB-based authentication system quickly get out of hand if you needed to carry a separate key for each system you might use. The best solution will be something akin to a SIM card as used in GSM phones, which has already been successfully tested as a method of secure authentication across a Wi-Fi network to a back-end cellular accounting system. Instead of a single key for each system, carry a USB key with either biometric (fingerprint) or password-based strong encrypted for mounting that contains a variety of certificates for use with an 802.1X EAP-TLS system. Even better, embed Secure ID into the USB key so that its ever-changing number is visible. This would provide yet another level of security: stealing the certificate and the username/password doesn't gain access without the Secure ID number. These kinds of authentication systems don't need to be baroque, and different networks might require different levels of security. But there should be checks and balances so that the theft of a string of data (like a certificate) or a piece of hardware (like a USB key) doesn't jeopardize the integrity of network....
