Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander

Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander 06/18/2004 09:28 AM

Hot on the heels of Apple's Airport Express comes Linksys's Wireless-G Range Expander, which at $99 is cheaper than the Apple option, but doesn't offer nearly the value, either. The WRE54G is only a range extender -- not an access point, like the Airport Express -- and of course doesn't do all the fancy iTunes streaming, which may or may not matter to you. It's designed to work with Linksys's Wireless-G routers and extends both Wireless-G and Wireless-B (the two 'almost standards' that generally work with 802.11b and 802.11g) by plugging into any available wall socket and pressing the 'auto configure' button. It's kind of fruity looking, too, but in a mildly appealing Rebel Hoth base equipment sort of way.

The Battle Over Directional Sound

The Battle Over Directional Sound 05/04/2004 04:44 PM
It's been almost exactly three years since we first wrote about directional sound technology that promised to (among other things) let everyone sitting in a car listen to their own radio stations (without headphones) without having to hear what anyone else was listening to. It turns out that the guy profiled in that article wasn't the only one working on the technology, and MIT's Tech Review has written an article talking about the two different inventors who are each working on directional targeted sound technology, and who are gearing up to battle each other in the marketplace. Of course, at this point, it sounds like both technologies are quite early on, and it makes you wonder if the two inventors (who appear to use similar methods) wouldn't be better off pooling resources and attacking the market together.

Satellite May Offer Fast Bi-Directional
Train Service

Satellite May Offer Fast Bi-Directional
Train Service
09/09/2004 12:29 PM
21Net, a UK company, says its technology can enable faster bi-directional wireless Internet service on trains than other options: Some other companies offer systems that use the cellular data networks to send data from trains to the Internet. 21Net says that it can use satellite links to support a higher speed service. During trials, four laptops on a train were connected at 700 Kbps each. Wi-Fi on commuter trips is one place where the business case for fee-based access is pretty clear. There's a captive audience eager to make use of what otherwise might be considered wasted time. In other satellite-backhaul news, a government IT magazine has more details about the network some troops in Afghanistan set up to improve their Internet access. It sounds like the kind of network the army should be offering troops. The soldiers have also hooked up VoIP phones to the network for far cheaper calling home than the Iridium phones offered by the army....

Evolved antenna designs

Evolved antenna designs 06/28/2004 11:35 AM
This antenna (and may others on the linked page) was evolved by NASA using a genetic algorithm. While highly effective, its design is counter-intuitive.
First, there is the potential of needing less power. Antenna ST5-3-10 achieves high gain (2-4dB) across a wider range of elevation angles. This allows a broader range of angles over which maximum data throughput can be achieved. Also, less power from the solar array and batteries may be required.

Second, the evolved antenna does not require a matching network nor a phasing circuit, removing two steps in design and fabrication of the antenna. A trivial transmission line may be used for the match on the flight antenna, but simulation results suggest that one is not required.

Third, the evolved antenna has more uniform coverage in that it has a uniform pattern with small ripples in the elevations of greatest interest (between 40 and 80 degrees). This allows for reliable performance as elevation angle relative to the ground changes.
