Affirmative Action and Segregation

Affirmative Action and Segregation

Affirmative Action and Segregation 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

The Dartmouth, the nation's oldest college newspaper, contained an interesting series of articles on affirmative action this Monday. It seems the Bush brothers have a new plan: end affirmative action, but increase spending (by a token amount) at "historically black" universities. Some quotes:

Saudia Affirmative Action

Saudia Affirmative Action 04/19/2004 03:09 PM
Saudization is the process of hiring Saudi Arabian nationals to join the Saudi workforce and is an interesting counterpoint to the US phenomena of outsourcing. The goal of Saudization is to discourage reliance on foreign workers as well as to combat domestic unemployment, which is worsened by the rapidly swelling ranks of restive, undereducated youth. Unfortunately it's not as easy to put into practice as it sounds.

Red vs. Blue and Political Self-Segregation:
“Republicans and Democrats joke these days that they can’t understand each other, that they feel as though they live on different planets. It’s no joke. They do. One of the reasons American politics is so bitter is that Republicans and Democrats are less likely today to live in the same community than at any time in the last 55 years.”
The Austin-American Statesman’s Bill Bishop begins a series of articles on the increasing political segregation across the US—a variety of segregation that has surprisingly increased while others (for example, racial) have declined. Timothy Noah of Slate has some thoughts. For background, it’s been discussed elsewhere that the traditional 2000 election red vs. blue state map is misleading and that a gradated county map might be more enlightening. Here’s one. Here’s an analysis with a different take on the data. And here are some other interesting cartograms of that election’s results. [Alternative Links Inside]

The war pretty much began last night on March 19th...

FCC Action on VOIP

FCC Action on VOIP 02/12/2004 02:12 PM
Today, the FCC declared Pulver.com's Free World Dialup service an unregulated information service, and launched a proceeding seeking comment on the treatment of voice over IP more broadly.

Chairman Powell said something to the effect that this is the most important proceeding in the history of communications regulation, and he's right.  There has been intense political back-and-forth on these issues behind the scenes, with Congressional leaders and the FBI pushing hard on the FCC.  The Commissioners and the staffers drafting today's items worked through the night to reach compromises.  The meeting was pushed back from 9:30 to 11am and the VOIP items were moved the the end of the agenda, no doubt to allow time for final rewriting.

It is vitally important that the tech community participate in the VOIP proceeding.  The decisions the FCC makes will determine not just how new VOIP providers like Vonage and Packet8 are treated, but the rules of the road for the broadband superhighway.  As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing in December, voice is now an application.  It's one of many applications that will be delivered through interconnected broadband networks.  The FCC's actions will determine the business environment for network operators, application providers, and content creators.  This is the whole enchilada.

When the text of the notice is released, we'll know the exact comment deadlines and questions being asked.  FCC proceedings are open to anyone -- you don't have to be a lawyer or a company in the space, and you can file via a Web form.  (One of my proudest accomplishments from my time at the Commission.)

I'll have more thoughts on this issue soon.

Hot hot hot Pompeii action 02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Xeni Jardin: This Der Spiegel story about erotic frescoes from Pompeii reveals that prior to being buried in heaps of ash, Pompeiians were totally whoring it up. Link. Shown here, an oral sex tableau. A pity none of this stuff made it into that Disco very Channel / BBC TV special; the program would have been infinitely more watchable.
(Thanks, Rob). See also this related English-language coverage about the frescoes from 2000 -- the year in which they became part of a public display at a newly restored ancient Roman bath: Link. This Lonely Planet documentary also featured them.

Erotic content in ancient art is hardly news, of course -- Boing Boing reader esben adds, "In the archaeological museum in Naples is the Gabinetto Segreto - the Secret Room. It's full of erotic pictures and statues. The phallus was obiously a big thing in ye olden days. The museum site is down, but here's loads of pictures from the whole collection." Link

And Matthew Krohn says,

Archaeologists have been talking about those frescoes in classes for years... Some of the houses have very well-preserved erotic scenes, as well as some of the villas, in the back rooms. There's even one fresco with a man with a set of scales weighing his... piece. Link. Plus their gardens are crammed full of phalluses just sticking out of the ground. That particular house is the house of a couple of merchants, and it has plenty of other frescoes.

Syndication in Action 04/30/2004 09:08 AM
I wasn't going to say anything about the IPO filing by everyone's favorite search company, on the theory that anyone reading this blog has already seen plenty about the news.  But one tidbit caught my eye.

According to Tristan Lewis, Google's S-1 states that about 1/3 of its advertising revenue in the last quarter came from non-Google sites in its network.  In other words, to use the terminology of my Harvard Business Review article, Google is syndicating its targeted advertisements.  Amazon.com was previously my best example, but it was only generating something like 10% of revenues from partner sites that use its technology.  I expect the Google number to increase, since its AdSense program for other sites is still relatively new, and competitive pressures will limit Google's ability to do more straight search engine deals.

The new blog is where I'll be posting things that are mostly content from elsewhere; occasionally, I'll add a line or two to the mix, but the content is highlighted from elsewhere. I've far too many posts rotting away in my news reader that deserve the attention of others — but aren't necessarily topical or relevant to this blog....

Lessig Legal Team Seeks Copyright Stories for Brewster Kahle v. John Ashcroft Lawsuit

"Lawrence Lessig and his legal team are asking for your help. Kahle v. Ashcroft is a lawsuit that challenges changes to U.S. copyright law that have created a large class of "orphan works" -- creative works which are out of print and no longer commercially available, but which are still regulated by copyright.

The Kahle team is collecting examples of people being burdened by these copyright-related barriers to the use of orphan works. Visit the Kahle Submission Site and tell us your story." [Copyfight]
