Wirelessly Enabling the Disabled

Wirelessly Enabling the Disabled

Wirelessly Enabling the Disabled 02/18/2004 01:30 PM

My latest piece for TheFeature is about researchers at Georgia Tech who are hacking mobile devices and off-the-shelf components to help disabled people become more independent. I'm really intrigued by the wearable "audiitory display," a navigation system for the blind that generates spatially-located sounds as trail-markers for the wearer to follow as they walk somewhere. Jitney Rolls on to the Hamptons,
Wirelessly
06/02/2004 07:48 PM
The Hampton Jitney gets a cell data uplink to hook its passengers up via Wi-Fi (reg. required): In a short piece by your editor in Thursday's New York Times, I describe the Wi-RAN (Rolling Area Network) developed by CEDX and Best Mobile Computing, and in trials with the Hampton Jitney. The Jitney is the high-class way to commute between your summer home or just plain Long Island residence and Manhattan. Some people commute--and I kid you not--every day, clocking in 3 or 4 hours roundtrip or more. In that environment, as on trains and planes, people don't have just quiet time to contemplate but empty time that's worth filling. Some of the Jitney coaches also have electrical outlets, meaning that you don't have to worry about discharging your battery, either. While the service runs today at 100 Kbps, the New York metro area will certainly be one of the first to see higher-speed cell offerings or even other forms of mobile wireless (cue Craig McCaw's entrance) allowing the service to expand its speed over time. Service runs $8 per trip or $40 per month for unlimited usage....

AP - External hard drives need no longer be tethered to a single computer. A new product from Linksys allows such devices, which are commonly used as supplemental or backup computer storage, to be wirelessly connected to a home network, so multiple users can tap into the data bank like a central library.

New York Group Plans Redunant Telecom
Wirelessly
04/24/2004 10:43 PM
The Alliance for Downtown New York proposes a wireless backup plan for telecommunications: For $10 million, the Alliance proposes building a laser and microwave system that would sit on top of five of the tallest buildings in the area and have line of sight from most offices. The system would relay to two other locations, one in Manhattan and one probably in New Jersey, in the event of a loss of service. The idea is that companies unable to bear the enormous costs of building their own similar backup systems could piggyback on the Alliance's, which would be vendor neutral to phone companies. This might make businesses who locate in the area less concerned about being cut off from telecom in the future, come what may, although real estate agents think it won't make a practical difference: rents are cheaper and that attracts tenants. The article mentions that the Alliance issued a report about its free Wi-Fi zones in which they said that the network had become one of the busiest of its kind in the world. However, the report isn't on their Web site; I'm trying to get a copy. The redundant telecom network could be used actively to provide more bandwidth to the free Wi-Fi zones, the Alliance said. You know how sometimes you think up a gadget but you figure that no one will ever build it? Well, the Omnifi is one of those gadgets, except that it's real. The Omnifi is a digital media player for your car with a 20GB hard drive and an 802.11b WiFi attachment which actually makes it possible (assuming your car is within range) to wirelessly beam your music directly to your car from your PC. You can also set it to automatically transmit all sorts of information to your car, like the weather, news, etc. The hard drive can also detach and be connected to a PC (sorta like the Phatnoise system) if your car is parked too far away for WiFi. Telstra Considers Enabling Pay Phones

Telstra Considers Enabling Pay Phones
with Wi-Fi
08/09/2004 04:49 PM
Telstra said it plans to build as many as 2,000 new hotspots over the next two years: It will initially build 15 of those using public pay phones as a trial. Telstra is trialing a wide range of technologies so it's not clear that the pay phone idea will ultimately be rolled out on a wider basis. TechDirt suggests that Telstra might want to follow Verizon's lead and offer free access to hotspots for DSL customers. But it sounds like Telstra is more interested in using Wi-Fi as part of a larger wireless strategy for blanket coverage. The Wi-Fi access might be bundled into Telstra's mobile networks to offer higher-speed access where available. On a side note, Australia and New Zealand seem to be the hot areas for trialing or using proprietary or new wireless technologies. IPWireless gear is in use in New Zealand by Woosh, Telstra is trialing Flarion gear, and Arraycomm built a network in Sydney. [link via Techdirt]...
