Documents filed with the FCC on Tuesday reveal a new LG
Bluetooth clamshell-style camera phone coming to Verizon's network.
Feature details on the VX-8100 are somewhat scarce, but it's
definitely tri-mode, dual-band CDMA and presumably the successor to
LG's (still not out) VX-8000. It's probably safe to assume a
greater-than-1-megapixel camera given the 8000's 1-megapixeler (It's
safe to assume that's not a word). It's pretty much impossible to
speculate about a release date or street price, but if I had to guess
I'd put it in the third or fourth quarter of 2005. We'll see.
(Thanks, Bobby!)

12/17/2004 06:44 PMSMC® Networks (www.smc.com), leading provider of networking solutions
for the SMB/e, the ISP and all the way home, today announced the
newest member of the EZ Connect™ family of home networking products,
the SMC-BT10 EZ Connect Wireless Bluetooth® USB Adapter. The new

The
Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the
short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a
new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast
as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data
Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and
remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word,
however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate
decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.

So to encourage Japanese people to actually spend 120 yen
(about $1.09) on a single can of soda, Coca-Cola today announced the
"Cmode 2" vending machine, which allows customers with cellular phones
to purchase drinks "cashlessly" one of three ways - two-dimensional
barcodes, infrared, and the FeliCa contactless IC system. Though
cashless "Cmode" vending machines have been in various places
throughout Japan since April of 2002, these are the first vending
machines to support contactless IC as a method of transfer.
With drink names like "Qoo," "SCORPION," and "Lovebody," who could
resist?

12/08/2003 11:39 AMI have a cellphone with Cingular, and opted to get the
extra line for 9.99 a month (a good deal). What I learned is this
(also true with Verizon): if you get a phone or an extra line, the
first year, you cannot cancel the contract. Well, you can, but it
costs more to cancel than to keep it open. In this case, they charge
200$ to cancel the contract, versus $80 to keep it open 8 more months,
after which cancelling is free.
By the way, if you're still with Verizon, consider Cingular. They
seem distinctly less evil, for now.
