Missed Call Scam Showing Up In The UK

Missed Call Scam Showing Up In The UK

Missed Call Scam Showing Up In The UK 02/18/2004 01:19 PM

Apparently, over in the UK there's a new scam that involves tricking people into calling expensive per-minute "premium" numbers. It works by randomly dialing mobile phone numbers and having the system hang up after one ring. This way, the caller ID on the phone records the number. When people call back, they're told they've won a prize, but have to call another number to receive it. That second number is a premium rate number with high per-minute fees (though, the caller is never told that). While concerned people in the article make this out to be a big deal, I wonder how many people are actually fooled. Do people actually call back unknown caller ID numbers on their phone? I always assume if they didn't leave a message it's not important or a wrong number. Second, if you do call that number back and you get a message saying you'd won and that you need to call another phone number - how many people would actually believe it? It screams out "scam!" I guess there are a lot of gullible mobile phone users out there.

Denise helps reinforce the notion that you MST go over all your past feeds - even if it takes days.......

Here's Denise's post.....

Timmy Turner, hero of Nickelodeon's Fairly Oddparents, has the answer for everything: "Somewhat impulsive, he often tends to make wishes without thinking about the possible consequences of his actions, or how to explain his wished-for stuff ('where'd you get that? Timmy: uh... Internet?')."

Iowa Computing, purveyor of all manner of computer components and peripherals, also offers this nifty carseat/stroller combo (with on-board audio system, of course):

Engineered Ride

[bag and baggage]

This is something only a parent can truly appreicate. We bought a new Peg Perego double stroller for our trip - and it's been a life saver several times over.

Hopefully I'll get to see Denise (and baby) at DIDW in October.

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
An odd article out of South Africa complaining that scam busters are just as bad as scam victims - in that they act in just as predictable a manner. Of course, the scam busters aren't the folks losing money to the scammers, and, in fact, they often are doing a good job to spread news of a scam to protect potential victims. So, I'm a bit confused as to what's so upsetting about people taking it upon themselves to tell others about a scam. Certainly, there are some things that don't deserve to be publicized, but are, due to the intensity of the efforts against them. However, scams are something that clearly should be publicized to limit the negative impact. It seems that the real complaint of the writer isn't so much scam busters, but "fad" busters who complain about people getting hooked on the latest fad. However, fads and scams are two very different things.

Scam Within A Scam Warning

Scam Within A Scam Warning 12/22/2003 07:43 PM
There have been a ton of warnings about so-called "phishing" spam scams - where a very realistic email from a well-known financial firm asks you to confirm the details of your account. Of course, the email isn't real and the scammers just want your account details. They go through all sorts of tricks to hide the fact that the email isn't real, but the latest such phishing scam uses a bit of social engineering. It warns people about such scams, and then says they need to fill out new information to avoid being taken by such a scam. It seems the scammers are trying to get increasingly clever, and it's an interesting social engineering trick to try to get people to let down their guard by first warning them about a scam - and then scamming them anyway.

Missed opportunity

Missed opportunity 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Apple are missing out on a huge opportunity. I've bought 198 songs through the iTunes music store now, and iTunes has access to the other music that I've imported from my own CD collection. I want to discover new music - why doesn't iTunes look at what I listen to, match it against buying habits tracked through the store and give me an Amazon style "people who like the music you listen to also liked...". Privacy concerns could be avoided by having the recommendation feature off by default - I'd turn it on in a heart-beat.

Sorry I missed the party

Sorry I missed the party 05/14/2004 12:17 PM

While evereyone else was out partying last night (Acteva also had a party) I was working to change the world - bringing DLAs to the masses.

More on my efforts later.

But for now - congrats to Ev and Jason.  I wonder if Orkut was there?

Smells like 1999.

Last night I attended the Blogger relaunch party at SF’ 26Mix. It was a pretty cool bash - and I mean the food, the music and the locale were pretty trendy. What struck me was the names and faces from the past, those who had become party regulars were all in full force. Jay Shellen, Evan Williams and a whole bunch of Blogger gang were in attendance, and so were the folks behind Craigslist, Newsmonster, Feedster and of course the queen of valley gossip, Chris Nolan. James and James of AmIhotornot were in attendance as well.

It reminded me of the parties in 1999 when the dotcom madness was in full swing. Lately I have been getting more of these party invites and there seems to be a certain buzz, back in the air. The rentals in San Francisco are inching up slowly, the traffic on Highway 101 is turning into a weebit of a nightmare, and even magazines are trotting out some familiar names. My magazine for instance has a story on Mary “Queen of the Net” Meeker, Nick Denton of Gawker Media. and a couple of others. Wired is having a NextFest. What makes it more like 1999, is the fact that a whole lot of journalists are talking about “blogging” as their salvation (which may or may not be true!) and quitting their jobs to do something with “blogs.” Back in the day, they were talking about web as their escape key. I think the hype machine around blogs is in high gear, and while it might make some like Rafat Ali or Nick Denton very rich, there is little or no hope for many of us.

In short, it smells and feels like 1999. Let the party begin - free vodka and canapes, hell I am not complaining.

Another missed warning?

Another missed warning? 12/30/2004 04:51 PM
The tsunami-warning blame game -- could the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have done a better job alerting Indian Ocean countries after learning of the earthquake? -- takes a new turn Thursday. The Washington Post reports that the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, based in Vienna, surely would have picked up the earthquake "but it had no chance to alert governments in the region because its offices were closed for the holidays." In fact, the network doesn't even possess a communication system capable of channeling early warning signals to the region. Should it? Writes the Post: "Bernard Massinon, a French seismologist who serves as scientific adviser to the test ban organization, said the agency's seismic stations -- including eight in Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka -- could technically be linked to an early warning system for earthquakes and tsunamis if member states decided to do it. 'Could we help by providing real-time data from this network?" he said. "The answer should be yes.'"

From Resume Spam To Missed Job
Opportunities

From Resume Spam To Missed Job
Opportunities
04/13/2004 03:45 PM
There have been complaints in the past about resume spam - where people either would randomly email out hundreds of resumes with no sense of targeting, or in response to a single job opening, an HR department would get bombarded with resumes. However, as spam filters become more common, this is leading to a different type of problem: legitimate resumes getting caught in spam filters. Whereas, in the past, people would try to put certain keywords into their resumes so that automated sorting technology would highlight their resumes, now people are trying to avoid certain words to keep their resumes from getting hung up (imagine how difficult it must be for anyone who worked on the product Viagra - a success story by any criteria - to get his or her resume into the hands of a new potential employer). Of course, this actually seems like a case where challenge-response could solve the problem. In announcing a specific job opening, perhaps it makes sense to set up a challenge-response email address for that particular opening. This would also let the company provide additional "are you sure you're appropriate for this job" type of warnings before the applicant submitted their resume.

ringback.jpgRingback tones, which aren't terribly new, are little snippets of music that play instead of the usual ringing you hear when calling someone’s cell phone. Verizon just teamed up with Universal Music, they of Mariah Carey and U2 fame, in order to offer 500+ beloved hits. Verizon uses the universal iconography of music—dancing silhouettes—to explain.

Verizon announced ringbacks last November for $1.99 a year plus a 99 cent monthly subscription. I can’t wait to regale my friends and family with a tinny ringback rendition of Baby Bash's Super Saucy.

Cellphone Warez Has Hidden SMS Dialer

Cellphone Warez Has Hidden SMS Dialer 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

trojan-mosquitos.jpg imageA cracked version of the popular "Mosquito v2.0" game for Symbian phones has turned out to include a special trojan payload: a dialer that sends a text message to the UK number 87140 with a charge of £1.50 (about $2.75) a pop. So yeah, that sucks, but you shouldn't be downloading phone warez, either.

Fortunately, if you're one of the unlucky ones who has been stung by the malware, removing it appears to be as simple as deleting the offending file. And while this is notable, and a little bit scary, maybe it should be a sign to mobile OS developers to start locking down the dialing functions of their phones a little more securely?
