The HAM radio equipment control libraries allow you to write amateur
radio equipment control programs for transceivers and antenna rotators
which use CAT or similar computer interfaces for control.
Changes:
This release adds new models TS-480, VR5000, and FT1000MkV Fld. The
frontend API sees port_t renamed as hamlib_port_t. Many fixes were
brought to models TS-570S, AR7030, AR3000A, Orion, FT-897, and IC746.
The 64-bit int handling is corrected, which potentially fixes the
backends kenwood, alinco, pcr, uniden, aor, jrc, and tentec. Parallel
port support has been added for BSD systems. Along with Visual Basic
testing, a .NET wrapper is now available.

08/16/2004 02:27 PMIt appears the folks running the Olympics are so focused on
controlling (i.e., "selling") the rights to broadcast accounts of the
Olympic games that they're
forcing
some radio stations to shut down their internet streams. The
radio stations in question have regular radio broadcast rights for the
Olympics, but since they didn't pay up to internet broadcast rights,
they need to turn off their internet streams for the duration of the
games. Considering the fact that it appears that no one is actually
attending these games in person, apparently, the Olympics has decided
that they're going to squeeze broadcasters for every last penny. Ah,
the spirit of the games.

New IM Record in Libraries
New IM Record in Libraries
03/14/2005 06:23 PMI've been so short on time lately that I've been trying to avoid
using what little blogging time I do have to simply repost what other
library bloggers are already putting up. This one, however, was just
too good to pass up.
when was the
last time you had this kind of response to a new library
service?
"Brian didn’t give me permission to publish a portion of
his email, but I’m so excited about it I’m going to throw caution
into the wind. He wrote [emphasis mine]:
'Rule number 1: Don’t send out IM reference fliers to
every middle school and jr. high classroom on the same day!
Had to have been at least 100 IMs in the first 2 hours after the
kiddies got home. For a while, I had about 20 IM windows up at once.'
"
Someone recently observed that there are a lot of Eeyo
res in the library community, but I think we can officially
declare IM reference a Martha-Stewart-good-thing for (at least) public
libraries and move it to Pooh status.
Cost of purchasing the AIM software: $0.
Cost of staff time to "man" the AIM service during those two hours:
already paid for.
Satisfaction of having 100 kids respond positively and view the
library in a new light: PRICELESS.

2D Graphics Libraries
2D Graphics Libraries
05/05/2004 07:45 PM
While platforms these days have fairly good 2D graphics support
like Quartz on OSX,
GDI+ on XP, and , and Gnome Canvas, developers like me often have
to use third-party
libraries for whatever reasons. On Win32, for example, GDI+
support is missing
in legacy platforms which means either giving up on fancy
graphics, redistributing
GDI+ binaries, use a third party library, or writing one
yourself. Writing one
yourself is fun (I have done it a couple of times over 20 years)
but, unless it offers
some unique features, you'll always end up migrating to a third
party library.
BTW, Flash has an excellent 2D graphics engine but it's lacks an
API so it's like
a sports car without a driving wheel. Yes, you can embed the
Flash ActiveX and
generate SWF on-the-fly but it's unwieldy for dynamic interaction
and even handling
gets tricky. Embedding Adobe SVG ActiveX is just as unwieldy
if not more.
While there are proprietary 2D engines out there, typically written
by a few guys
at a small company, they tend to disappear within a couple of
years, either bought
by companies (i.e. Apple, Adobe, Macromind, and Microsoft), or
abandoned out
of lack of interest or workable revenue model. Besides, they
charge fairly steep
fees so I tend to avoid them.
Out of all the freely available 2D libraries out there, Libart stands
out in features and quality. It offers fast
anti-aliased rendering
and it's use in Gnome Canvas over the years means most of the bugs
have already been
stepped on. Libart is also used to drive librsvg,
a SVG engine, and Java 2D, Java's graphics API, although Sun made
extensive changes
to tap hardware acceleration. While Libart can and has been
used cross-platform,
it's not exactly cakewalk to use in non-Linix platofrms. Cairo has
some interesting features and rising interest could mean it will
replace Libart someday,
but it's still in development.
Third-party 2D graphics library I really like these days is Anti-Grain
Geometry (AGG) which, although dormant for the last two years,
has been rejuvenated
with the released of version 2.1. AGG is written in C++ and
uses templates extensively
like ATL does. AGG is lightweight, very fast, flexible, and
full of features.
It even comes with a partial implementation of SVG
viewer as an example. AGG supports Win32, X11, and SDL as
is. It doesn't
yet support features variable stroke effects like Creature House's
Expression
3 engine and Fractal Design's Painter support but then
it's just me being
unreasonable. :-)
I should note that subpixel graphics was first done 20 years
ago in Word
Handler to display 70 columns of hi-res text on Apple
II.Silicon
Valley Systems, the company that published Word Handler, was
based just 5 minutes
from where I live now and I enjoy fond memories of working there
every time I pass
by the old office on El Camino. I guess everybody remembers
their first job.
LCD screens were just starting to replace LED on calculators at the
time, so Steve
Gibson and Microsoft ClearType can claim to be the first to use
subpixel graphics
on LCD screen. Lenny Elekman, where are you now?

12/04/2003 01:07 PMThe majority of libraries in England already have broadband access but
now the government is working on adding Wi-Fi: Most of the libraries
in King County, outside of Seattle, have Wi-Fi. It's a great, low-cost
way for libraries to offer Internet access without having to provide
computers for everyone. My library always has a line of people waiting
to get on its computers so perhaps with Wi-Fi some people could come
in with their own computers to use the Internet. But I wonder how many
of the people I see waiting in line there actually have laptops that
they could bring with them instead....

This Week in Amateur Radio
This Week in Amateur Radio
06/14/2004 07:43 PMPeople from all around the world get together via a technology medium
that allows them to form relationships through a global, far-flung
community even though they have never met face to face. It may not be
the first thing that comes to your mind, but amateur radio is alive
and well thank you very much.
Just ask any one at "
This Week in
Amateur Radio" which produces a weekly show devoted to nothing
else. A 100% volunteer effort, a typical show will be at least 80
minutes. "You wouldn't think there is that much information week in
and week out about a
hobby," says George Bowen, Executive
Producer of TWIAR "but other than Christmas and Thanksgiving week it's
there." There are plenty of stories about government regulations in
broadcasting but you are just as likely to hear stories like the one
this week about the military radio broadcasting that is jamming garage
door openers all over Florida.
Segment producers will record their own stories and then upload to one
of the mirrored ftp sites which George then downloads and compiles for
the show. The result is broadcast on bandwidth made available by
commercial satellite feeds but according to George more and more
listeners are simply picking up the MP3 version from TWIAR's website.
These MP3s and all the material on the site used to be marked with an
"All Rights Reserved" copyright because "that's what everybody else
was doing. Then I saw this piece on Creative Common on
TechTV and I thought 'Hey, that's what we're doing!'"
Indeed, segments are regularly shared with one of the other six such
shows produced around the world from New Zealand to Europe. They are
now free to do so legitimately thanks to George having put all the
shows on the web under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license.

World's baddest-ass amateur roboticists
World's baddest-ass amateur roboticists
03/29/2005 03:07 PMCory Doctorow:
This month's Wired has a stupendous article on three kids from
working-class Mexican migrant families in Phoenix who became amateur
roboticists and took home the gold for developing a world-beating
subaquatic robot using parts they bought with $800 they'd fundraised.
The Ralph's grocery store near the UCSB campus is done up to look like
a hacienda, complete with a red tile roof, glaringly white walls, and
freshly planted palms. The guys dropped Lorenzo off in front. It was
his bright idea, after all. He wandered past the organic produce
section, trying to build up his courage. He passed an elderly lady
examining eggplant - he was too embarrassed to ask her. Next, he saw a
young woman in jeans shopping for shampoo.
"Excuse me, madam," he began. He wasn't used to approaching women, let
alone well-dressed white women. He saw apprehension flash across her
face. Maybe she thought he was trying to sell magazines or candy bars,
but he steeled himself. He explained that he was building a robot for
an underwater contest, and it was leaking. He wanted to soak up the
water with tampons but didn't know which ones to buy. "Could you help
me buy the most best tampons?"
The woman broke into a big smile and led him to feminine hygiene. She
handed him a box of O.B. ultra-absorbency. "These don't have an
applicator, so they'll be easier to fit inside your robot," she said.
He stared at the ground, mumbled his thanks, and headed quickly for
the checkout.
"I hope you win," she called out, laughing.

06/05/2005 11:52 PMEver since I interviewed Dave about blogs for my book, Free Culture,
I've been thinking a lot about his idea of "amateur journalists." It
is a powerful concept, which rewards careful thought. To see its
value, we must remember the original meaning of "amateur," meaning one
who does something for the love of it alone. And when we think of
journalism that is regulated by those ideals, it is easy to see why
such journalism nicely complements commerical journalism. As he
sa
id to me,
"An amateur journalist simply doesn't have a conflict of
interest, or the conflict of interest is so easily disclosed that you
know you can sort of get it out of the way."
It is because I found Dave's view so compelling that I've been worried
for sometime about the emergence of advertising in blog space. I'm not
against it. I just worry about how it might put pressure on the
"doesn't have a conflict of interest" norm. If the virtue of the
amateur is to seek the truth, that virtue could be in tension with the
desire to earn more ad revenue. The simplest way to get linkbacks is
to say the most absurd things imaginable.
But the more I've talked about this with observers and friends, the
more I think the real fear is not bloggers tempted by ad revenues. It
is instead the emergence of the equivalent of tabloids in blog-space:
commercial entities whose sole purpose is to generate ad revenue, who
do that by being as ridiculous and extreme as possible.
The danger here is that the conflict has returned. Just as the British
tabloids care little about the truth in their path to selling papers,
commercial blog-loids care little about the truth in trying to attract
eyeballs. And it is here that the cycle turn vicious: for the amateur
space feeds the professional troll by careful and repeated efforts to
show that claims made are false or outrageous. If you're paid by the
click, who cares why people click.
This creates a dilemma for open and honest disagreement about the
facts. For here there is a conflict in interest: the interest of the
amateur journalist is not the interest of the professional troll. Yet
the only way the amateur can do his job -- by quoting and criticizing
-- is to feed the troll.
We either need a way to cite that doesn't reward bad behavior.
(Copyright law restricts that (Google, for example, would be really
angry if you started linking to caches rather than original
locations).) Or we need a way to know when to ignore.
In either case, imho, it would be useful to think more about this
conflict in interest, if the nature of the amateur space is not to be
displaced by something different.
