DVD Jon becomes iTunes Jon
DVD Jon becomes iTunes Jon
01/06/2004 01:14 PMJon Johansen, the Norwegian programmer who cracked DVD encryption, has
effectively done the same with iTunes DRM-ed music.
"We're about to find out what Apple really thinks about Fair Use,"
Johansen told The Register via email. Johansen cracked iTunes DRM
scheme in November by releasing code for a small Windows program that
dumps the stream to disk in raw AAC format. This raw format required
some trivial additions to convert it to an MP4 file that could be
played on any capable computer.
But in the best Apple ease-of-use tradition, Johansen has now made
this
completely seamless, integrating it with the VideoLAN streaming free
software project.

New iTunes
New iTunes
04/28/2004 02:26 PMI've been playing with the new version of iTunes for the past hour
or two and the first thing that strikes me is all those annoying
little arrows that link to the music store. I could perhaps see this
being useful every once in a while, if I think to myself "I wonder if
there's a new record by Mountain Goats?" but I can't see doing that
more than once or twice a month. Why not put a "Look up in the iTunes
Music Store" right-click menu option instead? The weirdest part is
that my own purchased music has links to the store... so I can
purchase them again? I'm turning that off asap but I still wonder
why the arrows are turned on by default. Perhaps, as Tom just told me, to blur the lines
between "your music" and "the store music for sale" which would
certainly increase sales.
The party mix is weird looking, interface-wise, I wonder if it's
using any sort of BPM analysis to arrange songs next to each other. I
can't really tell the difference between that and random shuffle at
this point.
Andre pointed out
compilations to me, which I didn't notice before either. It appears
that they're reading compilation info from ID3 tags now, and putting
albums by various artists in the Artists browse list, which is kinda
useful.

You don't own your iTunes, they 0wn you
08/22/2004 07:30 AMCory Doctorow: Good blog post on why Apple iTunes
DRM -- and other DRM systems -- that convey the message "you don't
own the music you buy, you merely license it," make for such
unsatisfying experiences.
We are outraged at the theft of a bicycle. We would be astonished to
find bank executives having lunch on our patio, (“actually, if
you read the contract, you will see we own this part of your house-the
whole yard actually. Hank's gone to get his barbeque.”) We would
be unhappy to get a note from J. Crew telling us that the expiry date
for your new shoes has been moved forward and that we must cease and
desist in their public display. No, as we understand and feel it, we
own these things as if ownership were outright and in perpetuity.
Ownership has this quality in part because the things we own are part
of what Goffman would call our identity kit--they help define who we
are, both inwardly and outwardly. Strip us of these things, and our
lives become, as Lear put it, “cheap as beasts.”
Naturally, we regard the most “telling” of our possessions
as if they were strategic resources and we defend them as governments
do. Our security depends on their security.

DRM in iTunes On, Off, Now On Again
DRM in iTunes On, Off, Now On Again
03/24/2005 11:50 AMJon Johansen’s PyMusique application which allowed purchasing
and downloading of music from iTunes Music Store without the normal
DRM attached was shut down by Apple, and now is back working again.
PyMusique does not write out DRM to the song, leaving it unprotected
and free to be used on an unlimited number of machines. Johansen says
he wrote the program to allow Linux users to buy music from iTunes
music store, the ability to move the music from machine to machine
without the DRM is just a nice side-effect. Looks like this serve and
volley will continue for a while.

RNC speeches available via iTunes
09/01/2004 04:58 PMIn July Apple's iTunes Music Store, in conjunction with Audible.com
and cable political news channel C-SPAN, released free recordings of
speeches made during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in
Boston, Mass. The audiobooks are free to download, though they require
users to have a valid iTunes Music Store account. Now the iTunes Music
Store features the same deal for speeches recorded during the
Republican National Convention, which is taking place
this week in New York City. As MacCentral posted this article, the
site featured the speeches of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert and
Heather Wilson, Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain, former NYC
Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
