Seamless Nor Mobile
07/27/2004 04:32 PMWe mentioned the
non-surprisi
ng, non-groundbreaking nature of Motorola's expected announcement
concerning a WiFi-enabled mobile phone last week when the company
conveniently leaked the info they'd first announced a year and a half
ago. Now, after pumping up the PR efforts, it seems that everyone is
writing about this WiFi-cellular phone, without bothering to look at
the details. However, looking at those details make the phone
appear... not that interesting. It's really a
very limited device that can only be used with special 802.11a
hardware. So, don't think you'll be using the phone at Wi-Fi
hotspots any time soon. This is really just a gimmick to try to sell
a new mobile phone to business users.

MSN Japan to offer Blog service
MSN Japan to offer Blog service
08/05/2004 12:17 AMThanks SYBOLD. According to the report at Reuters,
MSN Japan, joining hands with local content provider, T.O.S Co. Ltd.,
will launch a Blogging service by next week.
The Blogging culture has in deed made its impression to Microsoft's
chairman, Bill Gates whom hinted not long ago that he too, could start
blogging. MSN hopes to compete with Google's Blogger and
expected one million users in the first year.
Apart from supporting the overwhelming demands in the country where 9
out of 10 houses are web-enabled, MSN Japan is also hoping to use this
service as advertising medium.
"Magazines, for example, cannot hit a break-even point if the
circulation is below 100,000. We target one million users to be
recognized as an effective advertising vehicle," said MSN Japan
GM, Yoshie Furukawa.
The service, according to Furukawa, will differentiate from others by
supporting mobile devices to allow users to read or update their blog
on mobile phones.
It is still unclear whether the service will also be offered in other
countries.

Linspire CEO To Offer Music Service With
No DRM Restrictions
02/05/2005 10:16 PMFormer MP3.com chief and Linspire CEO Michael Robertson will
reenter the music world next week with MP3tunes, a service that
promises music without DRM restrictions.
The announcement will be
made next week at the Linspire
Desktop Summit, where a new VOIP company, SwitchVox, will also be
launched. Robertson's other venture, SIPphone, will also introduce a
$39 device designed to facilitate Internet calling.
Robertson
said he's not worried about the record labels and their requirements
for rights-management technology. At the time it was sold, Robertson
said, MP3.com attracted top artists, like Maroon 5 and Linkin Park. "I
think the labels are interested in one thing: selling," he said. "If
you build the audience they will come."

Satellite May Offer Fast Bi-Directional
Train Service
Satellite May Offer Fast Bi-Directional
Train Service
09/09/2004 12:29 PM21Net, a UK company, says its technology can enable faster
bi-directional wireless Internet service on trains than other options:
Some other companies offer systems that use the cellular data networks
to send data from trains to the Internet. 21Net says that it can use
satellite links to support a higher speed service. During trials, four
laptops on a train were connected at 700 Kbps each. Wi-Fi on commuter
trips is one place where the business case for fee-based access is
pretty clear. There's a captive audience eager to make use of what
otherwise might be considered wasted time. In other satellite-backhaul
news, a government IT magazine has more details about the network some
troops in Afghanistan set up to improve their Internet access. It
sounds like the kind of network the army should be offering troops.
The soldiers have also hooked up VoIP phones to the network for far
cheaper calling home than the Iridium phones offered by the army....
