Music Rental: Another POV

Music Rental: Another POV 06/01/2004 05:43 AM
People don't want to rent music, observed Steve Jobs, which is why there isn't a subscription-based service over at the iTunes Music Store. And I tend to agree on this point.
But, one of the "advantage" of the old Napster, a lot of people have also observed, is the ability to sample and discover new music. And sampling and discovering new music on the iTunes Music Store, currently, is too much work. A lot of clicks. A lot of waiting.
Maybe the new iPod division should invent something like a personalized radio station, which can be listened via iTunes or iPod. The tunes selection will be partly based on what the user have on his iTunes library. And, oh, a 30-second preview is simply not enough for discovering new music.
Simply choose the option, "Include iTunes Music Store samples", and iTunes/iPod will selected previews into your current playlist. Perhaps even with a text-to-speech announcement. Oh, of course, make it easy for the user to then buy the tune.

Rental Car GPS Spying!

Rental Car GPS Spying! 04/06/2005 06:18 PM

My buddy and I were driving at a rate of speed in a rental car that was well above the posted limit a year or two ago. Out of the blue his cell phone rang and as he talked I noticed he started slowing down. You guessed it, the rental car agency was calling him saying he was violating his rental car agreement.

If memory serves me correctly he was charged like $300.00 extra when we turned the car in. Finally a court has stood up and say you cannot do this. If your not aware that rental car companies are doing this you have been so advised. [Techdirt< /a>]

There was an ad on TV for a bridal fair just a moment ago. It occurred to me that the bride spends thousands of dollars on a dress she’ll never wear again but the groom rents his tuxedo, which is something he’ll have many chances to wear again. That seems backward to me.

The Future of Video Rental

The Future of Video Rental 06/22/2004 08:58 AM

Blockbuster jabs back at its rivals: This is an article about the future of the Blockbuster video rental chain, but mixed in there is a lot of good information about upcoming video delivery technology.

Cable operators say they have the best solution of all. They provide about 16.5 million homes with video-on-demand (VOD) ‐ a service that enables viewers to watch a movie whenever they want with the same flexibility that traditional videos offer to pause, rewind and fast-forward. Nearly 37 million cable subscribers will probably have VOD by 2008.

What I'm still waiting for is the service that will let me pick a movie from a menu and watch it right then, instead of ordering it and having to wait until a certain time to watch it. Wake me up when this happens.

What To Rent: Its first recommendation for me was "Maverick." Too bad I hate westerns. I don't care much for Jodie Foster, either.

The single greatest question troubling mankind at this time is "What movie should I rent ?". We are here to answer that question! What to Rent is a website linked to a computer-cluster that will recommend a movie for you to watch based upon your personality and the type of film experience you are looking for.

It doesn't require any personal information to create a profile, not even an email address. And no new password to remember. Refreshing.
