UK bans G5 ad 11/11/2003 09:21 AM
Apple has been forced to pull its television advertising claiming that the G5 is "the world’s fastest, most powerful personal computer" from the UK after eight viewers contacted the Independant Television Commision to complain that it was inaccurate. After reviewing the ad, the IDC decided it was misleading, stating that "the ITC considered that there was insufficient evidence to support the claim 'world’s fastest, most powerful personal computer.'" The ad has been...

Google Bans Itself... Briefly

Google Bans Itself... Briefly 07/30/2004 01:40 PM
Ever since announcing the details of their IPO, Google has not had the best week. That same day they came under something of a denial of service attack by the MyDoom virus, lots of analysts seem to have reacted badly to their IPO plans, and then, last night, it appears for a while they accidentally removed themselves from their own index. According to Google, Google did not exist for about nine hours, after which it returned. Perhaps in their latest attempt to weed out link spammers... they caught themselves?

U.K. Military Bans iPods

U.K. Military Bans iPods 07/13/2004 08:58 AM

UK military: iPOD is security risk: Look, do we need anymore proof that Apple is evil?

The pocket-sized digital music player, which can store thousands of songs, is one of a series of banned gadgets that the military will no longer allow into most sections of its headquarters in the UK and abroad.

Devices with large storage capabilities — most notably those with a Universal Serial Bus (or USB) plug used to connect to a computer — have been treated with greater suspicion of late by government agencies and corporations alike.

This comes on the heels of consulting firm Gartner's recommendation to ban iPods in the workplace.

California Bans All E-Voting Machines

California Bans All E-Voting Machines 04/30/2004 07:15 PM
We knew that California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley understood the real issues involved with complaints concerning electronic voting machines. After all, he was the one last year who said that all electronic voting machines in California should have a paper trail. Now, following a recommendation last week concerning problem s with the way Diebold managed their e-voting machines, Shelley has gone even beyond the recommendations to say that all electronic voting machines will be banned from the state, unless they implement a certifiable paper trail or put in place a specific list of 23 security measures. At the end of the article, he also appears to indicate that he's asking the state Attorney General to file charges against Diebold for knowin gly breaking the law.

Disney bans Segways in the parks

Disney bans Segways in the parks 02/10/2004 02:50 AM
Disabled Segway users are outraged at Disney's decision to ban Segways from the theme parks.
Disney World doesn't allow visitors, even those with disabilities like Exum, to use the self-balancing transportation machines in the parks. The policy angered some Segway owners with disabilities and surprised others since the Disney parks have a reputation for accommodating the disabled.

They said even some Disney employees use Segways, which are becoming increasingly popular with people who otherwise would have to use wheelchairs.

"I'm not prepared to let a corporate attorney dictate to me how I should be mobile," said Exum, who is technically quadriplegic from an injury as a teenager but functions as a paraplegic.

Principal bans bl0gging: "not

Principal bans bl0gging: "not
educational"
03/31/2005 02:31 AM
Cory Doctorow: A Junior/Senior High School principal in Vermont has banned in-school blogging because "blogging isn't educational."
Principal Chris Sousa said the decision to block the site from school was made because blogging is not an educational use of school computers.

But he's also urging parents to keep tabs on their children's blogging, with a particularly close eye to what personal information the student may be posting on sites like Myspace.com.

In 1988, I was the writer-in-electronic-residence for a class of grade 2/3 students in Toronto, reading and helping them with their writing via 14.4K modems using ZModem transfers. Getting them to use to computer to write, revise, and critique one another was an amazingly powerful tool for unleashing their creativity and improving their communications skills. If this prinicpal thinks blogging isn't educational, he needs his head examined: he should be seeking out every student blogger in the school and giving them special time to blog more -- and giving them extra credit besides. Bellev ue school bans hats, hoods... In order to curtail unproven gang activity, Interlake High School has banned baseball caps, and the wearing of hoods, stemming from alleged gang involvement on the part of a few students. The faculty "believes" there to be gang actvity, and we all know that gangs require hooded-sweatshirt / ballcap uniforms, or you're out... Gang members can usually be singled out due to their poor fashion taste, but it has nothing to do with how they joined. This must be more of that freedom we North Americans seems to endorse so much...
