Broadcom Says EZ Does It

Broadcom Says EZ Does It 05/03/2004 02:20 AM
Broadcom introduces shortcut for creating strong Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys without the fuss of memorizing long base-16 numbers: The Wall Street Journal broke the news embargo early with a brief item (sub. req.) about SecureEZSetup, Broadcom's new method of guiding home users to create a WPA encryption key without having any technical knowledge. SecureEZSetup, despite the unwieldy name, is a simple two-step wizard in which users choose two out of four personal questions to answer from which a full-length 16-byte WPA key is generated. The user can then answer the questions the same way on another computer or enter the hexadecimal key for non-EZ systems for compatibility. New or additional setupChoosing and answering questionsResulting key The four questions are mother's maiden name, birthday, the name of a first pet, or the name of the street on which an answerer grew up. Clever users can invent other answers to questions, of course, as long as they keep them consistent, such as using Einstein's birthday or a spouse's first bet--or even entering an unrelated word for mother's maiden name. The first time you set up a router with SecureEZSetup, the key is stored in the router's configuration and in the local wireless adapter. The setup wizard allows you to save and print the information you entered, including the long hexadecimal key, for reference in configuring addition machines. The setup also assigns a unique SSID (network name) to the Wi-Fi gateway based on that gateway's MAC address. Jeff Abramowitz, senior director of marketing for wireless LAN technology, said that their customers, which integrate Broadcom chips into consumer and enterprise products, would start rolling out EZ into products as soon as in the next month, but more likely in upgrades destined for before the back-to-school period. He declined to say which companies initially plan support. Abramowitz said that the algorithm that drives the setup would be made available to incorporate into a standard, and that the front-end would be backward compatible for all of their shipping equipment. Because the algorithm hasn't been open to public scrutiny, the possibility remains that a cracker could discover a method to precompute in finite time all or most possible keys based on all reasonable length answers to the four questions in each combination. Because WPA keys can be forced out of a router in their encrypted form and examined later offline, if this number of precomputed keys...

Broadcom Says No Early 802.11n 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Tim Higgins gets it straight from the horse's mouth that Broadcom has no early 802.11n slated: The high throughput standards group was formed just a few months ago and expects to be done by Oct. 2005. Earlier reports that Broadcom would release 802.11n silicon relatively soon were incorrect....

Broadcom Supports PCI Express

Broadcom Supports PCI Express 04/04/2005 12:52 PM

Broadcom claims first Wi-Fi chipset for PCI Express: PCI Express is the next next generation of motherboard-based expansion technology with a high er-speed switched bus architecture for better throughput. PCI Express (PCIe) can push 1 Gbyte/s of data; even the fastest proprietary flavors of 802.11 support about 3 to 4 Mbyte/s (30 to 40 Mbps), so it's not a stretch to have multiple cards in a single PCIe chassis, even. The Broadcom chipset is sampling now.

Broadcom Goes Higher Speed

Broadcom Goes Higher Speed 01/09/2004 09:52 PM
Broadcom introduced an 802.11g chip at CES that promises to burst up to 125 Mbps: Buffalo Technology also introduced the first product to use the chip, the AirStation Router-g. Broadcom said it achieved the performance gain with technology that closes the timing gap between data packets. The chips use just one channel to transmit. Broadcom says the chips are compatible with standard 802.11g gear and won't cause service degradation on nearby networks. Broadcom is behind many of its competitors that have already introduced higher speed chips. Atheros offers a chip that can burst to 108 Mbps used by Netgear and D-Link. That gear, which employs several methods to achieve the higher throughput including channel bonding, degrades the performance of nearby Broadcom networks. It doesn't have negative affects on all nearby networks, though....

Broadcom Allowed to Say Microsoft in
Announcement
11/04/2003 10:57 AM
There's a careful dance done between mammoth partners and small companies as to when you can speak their name in a press release: Broadcom received the go ahead, as you can see, to state that Microsoft's new 802.11g home wireless products will use their chips. This was known for a while, but this is the first public announcement, and should be yet another boost for Broadcom. Microsoft's products, which I haven't had the chance to use in their previous or new incarnation yet, have the unique and much-praised distinction of encouraging users to turn on security and actually facilitating distributing the key (using a floppy disk, but, hey, whatever works) among computers on the network....

Linksys, Broadcom Demo SecureEasySetup

Linksys, Broadcom Demo SecureEasySetup 03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Broadcom should be chortling with glee today as the leading consumer Wi-Fi maker demonstrates its one-button security setup: Broadcom's second-generation SecureEasySetup lets consumers add WPA encryption to a network by clicking a button (in software or hardware) on an access point and then on devices that need to be added. I wrote extensively about SecureEasySetup and some of my concerns about, along with Broadcom's answers to, denial-of-service and man-in-the-middle nuisance attacks (read overview, contrasted with Atheros solution, and a follow-up). Linksys and HP committed to adding SecureEasySetup back in January, and Linksys demonstrated upcoming hardware at the German technology trade show CeBIT yesterday. At the VON conference this week, Broadcom demonstrated connecting a Wi-Fi voice over IP phone to a network using SecureEasySetup....

Broadcom Puts 802.11g on a Single Chip

Broadcom Puts 802.11g on a Single Chip 06/29/2004 10:25 AM
Broadcom's latest 802.11g system puts the whole megillah on a single chip: While we don't highlight every chip announcement, this is another roadpost on the way to the inclusion of higher-speed Wi-Fi in any product that could benefit from it. A single chip is easier to integrate, reduces the overall cost of materials, and decreases power consumption....
