Here's the desperate, pathetic message I got from Friendster today. I'm starting to think they just don;t matter anymore.

Seriously. I know we here at Friendster shouldn't play favorites, and our chief operating officer (he's the old guy in the office) told us not to do this, but seriously, you just totally rock. The way you reconnect with old friends. The way you've figured out just how small and interconnected the world really is. The way you discovered people with the same interests as you. We suspect you've even gotten a date out of Friendster, or that if you didn't, you could have if you needed to. Easy. With one of those three suspiciously hot people who keep popping up right above your friends list. For other people, we just use those pictures as cruel, aspirational temptation. But for you, they're totally getable.
We even made Friendster much faster just for you. But hey - don't tell anyone we told you all of this. That old guy in the office will just start lecturing us again and pulling out charts and graphs and PowerPoint displays. He's such a loser.

One UI Does Not Fit All.

To see the full-screen trailers of The Incredibles and Alexander, Apple is making you use iTunes, rather than its QuickTime player. (It uses QuickTime for the full screen version of Spider-Man II or Sky Captain.) After you view the trailer with iTunes, you end up at the iTunes store's new trailers section. However, most of the trailers housed there drive you to QuickTime, rather than iTunes, as the media player.

I don't believe that one UI fits all. Neither does Apple, usually. There's good reasons that the UIs for QuickTime, iTunes, Safari, the iPod, and OS X are different, and tuned to the functions and medium they're focused on. A browser is about browsing and searching. It accomodates viewing short media like music clips and trailers via plug-ins just fine. Music lends itself to playlists, sorting by artist, album, or genre, and, when portable, one-thumb scrolling and manipulation. Etc., etc.

The iTunes video experience exposes some flaws of the single UI approach. It's probably just an implementation glitch, but with QuickTime you can skip ahead or back in the trailer; you can't with iTunes. Tivo, who is very good at creating a TV UI, falls flat with its music and photo features. Microsoft's Media Center implementations - both portable and TV screen versions - are similarly challenged, though Microsoft, for once, is not crippling them with too many Windows conventions.

Mozilla is an excellent web browser. You heard it here first, folks. I have been using this browser exclusively for about two months now and I have not been disappointed once. It has the best support for W3C standards, as well as being quicker and lighter then Internet Explorer (results may vary). But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. The real point of this argument is that the top feature in Mozilla, in my opinion, is tabbed browsing. Observe... As an example of how I use the RSS features of my own web site, when I find an article I want to read from one of the links, I middle-click. Mozilla, under the Preferences area, allows you to set the option to have links open in new "tabs". Therefore, I can view numerous web sites at once, without having that number of windows open. Update: I forgot to mention that Mozilla's side-project Phoenix also supports all the goodies that Mozilla does, as well as tabbed browsing, while weighing in a smaller overall size. Check it out; version 0.4 was released last week. Speaking of reading RSS feeds, this evening while I was reading these feeds I clicked on Simon Willison's feed and lo and behold I saw my web site's name. Thanks to Simon for linking to my page, I appreciate it. I enjoy reading his musings daily. New Look: stonefishspine has put up a new design today. He's been testing new designs for a while and I think I like this one best. Speaking of designs, I dig Zeldman's new digs as well.

Here's one for all those teachers freakin g out when their students hand in a paper written in "txt". Now, those same kids are blaming current school programs for not teaching them how to write properly. The problem is that the new SAT exam includes a written component -- and they do mean written. Students will be expected to pick up a paper and a pencil for the first time in years and actually jot down the essay answer in their very own chicken scratch. Tragically, many of these kids claim they have been using keyboards and keypads for so long, the idea of writing with a pencil scares them silly. They're afraid their handwriting will be so bad that they'll get a bad score. The schools respond that they still teach good penmanship, and seem to think that the kids are just whining excessively. Of course, considering the rest of the exam has been entirely computerized for years, why not just give the kids a keyboard and let them type their essay responses (or, since the kids these days are so into text messaging -- let them text their essays)?
