02/18/2004 12:00 PM

Click image for full size. A mysterious epidemic of posters is reported in LA this week. We understand they bear the work of famed street artist Robbie Conal, and we know they're some sort of sneaky underground campaign for some Hot New Thing Which Shall Be Revealed Shortly, and that posters sending up Wynona, Courtney, and Moby are also in the works, but we're told we'll be sent on a one-way ride to Naked Scientology Boot Camp for extensive botox torture if we reveal their true origin and purpose. (Thanks, Susa nnah!)

This is not another political polemic. The way that Kuro5hin, and virtually every other forum in the world, is 'discussing' politics has become more than tiresome. It is damaging, relentless, and all-too-often it is mindless. What follows is a quote from a Henry Miller novel, and some reflection.

Biblically-themed snacks

Biblically-themed snacks 06/22/2005 01:50 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: Picture
3-8 When Linsday was at the Orlando airport on her way home from TechEd 2005, she took photos of some snacks featuring characters from the Old Testament. It's a pretty good idea. For one thing, I imagine Florida has a lot of fundamentalist Christians, and for another, the company doesn't have to pay anyone for character licensing fees. The products' names include Noah's Nuggets, Abraham's Bosom, Rachel's Delight, Sweet Shalom, and Bar of Judah. I suspect the manufacturer of these snacks has a pretty good sense of humor.

PodBrix inspires Windows-themed Minifigs

PodBrix inspires Windows-themed Minifigs 04/13/2005 04:57 PM
PodBrix’s popular Apple-themed Minifigs has prompted another company to offer a Bill Gates Minifig for the enjoyment of Microsoft fans. Just Brix, who (like PodBrix) has no affiliation with LEGO, told Spymac its Bill Gates Minifig has been “very successful” since going on sale in mid-March. Just Brix created a total of 400 units. The company is operated by a team of 3 people who want to remain anonymous, according to a company spokesman. “The idea for a Bill Gates Minifig mainly came from an article in the iCreate magazine that covered a story on Podbrix. We thought this was a perfect opportunity to give PC users the same neat gifts as Mac users,” the source said. “We have received no feedback from Bill Gates, but we hope that he is proud to be a work of art.” The Bill Gates Minifig is listed for $29.88 USD, with worldwide shipping available. PodBrix began the Minifig collector craze in February when a limited edition run of 300 of its first work of art sold out in less than 10 hours. Called the 1K Brix Minifig, it was designed to look like one of Apple’s famous iPod silhouette ads and featured a black Minifig with a white iPod. The Minifig was accompanied by a cardboard backdrop signed by the artist, Tomi. PodBrix followed up with a “Keynote” Minifig featuring Steve Jobs that sold out in 36 minutes and a T-shirt/iPod shuffle holder called the Brixwear 1000 that sold out in 18 minutes. Spurred on by the success of the Minifig creations, Tomi has also launched a new online shop to sell iPod shuffle related accessories, with the first product called iShirt now being featured. The black shirt with white lettering features a patent-pending magnetic clasp system that holds an iPod shuffle in place as part of the t-shirt design. Tomi said a new PodBrix Minifig product will be released within a week. “It will NOT be Woz... but he will come later.” And it won’t be a Bill Gates Minifig, either, Tomi says. “I really want to stay in the Mac enthusiast genre since this is my personal interest.”

US Anti-Espionage Posters

US Anti-Espionage Posters 04/18/2005 02:56 PM
L oose lips sink ships!!!1 (There be images, some quite big here) I suspect a lot of MeFi shares my obsession with propaganda (and propaganda-style) posters, both domestic and foreign, as well as the photoshops that the Something Awful or Fark crowds generate. CoolGov has a link today to the Office of the National National Counterintelligence Executive and their Anti-Espionage poster collection. Some are great, some are almost pure propaganda, and some show how obsessed with secrecy our government has become. That lead me to Google to look for posters on the *.gov and *.mil domains. Check out the posters for "Venemous Snakes of Afghanistan and Pakistan", or what the well dressed airmen is wearing (*note the "Essentials"), posters from the NOAA telling you that "lightn ing kills", the Code of Ethics for Government Officers and Employees, and this one telling GI's why smoking could kill them.

Works Progress Administration posters

Works Progress Administration posters 09/27/2004 03:29 AM
David Pescovitz: I love the design of this vintage anti-vandalism poster. (Click on it for a larger image.) According to this site, it was part of a series printed after WWII by the Works Progress Administration. Here's more on the WPA Posters from the Library of Congress's "By the People, For the People" exhibit:
result"The By the People, For the People: Posters from the WPA, 1936-1943 collection consists of 908 boldly colored and graphically diverse original posters produced from 1936 to 1943 as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. Of the 2,000 WPA posters known to exist, the Library of Congress's collection of more than 900 is the largest. These striking silkscreen, lithograph, and woodcut posters were designed to publicize health and safety programs; cultural programs including art exhibitions, theatrical, and musical performances; travel and tourism; educational programs; and community activities in seventeen states and the District of Columbia. The posters were made possible by one of the first U.S. Government programs to support the arts and were added to the Library's holdings in the 1940s."
A reprint of this Result poster is on eBay right now, but of course I'd rather have an original. Link (Thanks, Michael-Anne!)

Copyright free antiwar posters 03/13/2003 10:24 AM
Kimberly sez: "Graphic designers nationwide are organizing to offer provocative, high-impact anti-war posters that are copyright-free and downloadable online. Participants so far include (among others) Michael Mabry, Michael Cronan, Peter Kuper, whose work appears regularly in Time and Mad, and design legend Milton Glaser, whose 'I (Heart) NY' is arguably the most referenced design in American popular culture."
"Copyright-free" means you can use this art for anything, including adding your own information to it and even printing it commercially.
