Wicked-cool home robot videos from Japan 02/18/2004 10:53 AM

Robotics Society of America President and Robolympics founder David Calkins tells BoingBoing:

"While in Japan, I saw the coolest thing ever! Fighting robots. But not in the traditional Battlebots sense. Imagine rock-em sock-em robots, only fully articulated and computer controlled. It's called Robo-One and it's amazing. 15" tall androids belt each other boxing style until one falls down. These mini androids are as articulate as the Sony Curio, Honda ASIMO, or Fujitsu HOAP - only guys are making them in their apartments for about $3000, rather than 10 Million. I've uploaded a bunch of videos to give you an idea. Robolympics is sponsoring a Robo-One match in San Francisco in March - along with Battlebots, sumo bots, and others. Watch these videos!"

Todd: "If you've fiddled with the Terminal and the command line in Mac OS X a bit, you know how many commands are available, and how much power the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X offer. While the command line offers no GUI - no buttons or menus - you can perform powerful tasks from the Terminal, and, in many cases, do things that the GUI does not allow."

Xeni Jardin: The review of Japanese fetish porn video "Zenra Ballet 2" on Something Awful is a hoot.
At a Glance: Get out your copybooks, because you can now cross "ballet" off of the "Big List of Things the Japanese Won't Make Porno Out Of". If you are an avid fan of ballet - but, you aren't such an avid fan that you actually have some modicum of respect for the art of ballet dancing - then you are probably the target market for this DVD. It features exciting behind the scenes interviews, some regular and wholesome non-erotic ballet dancing, and then multiple nude and even sex-filled dance sequences. You have not lived until you have seen a Japanese pirate rip a boner out of his leotard and plunge it into the waiting food-hole of a sassy ballerina.

Sexual Content: Heavily mosaic censored dancin' and a prancin'.

World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan

World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
The International Robot Fair 2004 started off with a "World Robot Declaration" yesterday. The declaration states three specific expectations that future robots must meet and declares 5 resolutions on what must be done to bring the next generation of robots into existence. It puts into words the Simak-like Japanese philosphy towards robots that we've been aware of in a general sense for years. Basically robots will be the companions of the human race and assist humans physically and psychologically while helping to keep the world safe and peaceful. The full text of the declaration is included below.

Home
03/08/2004 11:03 PM
BoingBoing pal du Paris Roland Piquepaille says:
There's a new robot in town who wants to guard your home. This new security robot, which currently has no name, is designed by the Korean company Mostitech and will be distributed starting in June by Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom. With its price tag of only $850, it will be a serious competitor for Banryu, which costs $18,000. The unnamed robot is 50 centimeters tall and weighs only 12 kilograms. In case of emergency, such as a fire, its cameras can take snapshots and send them to the owner's cell phone. Likewise, if an unexpected visitor is entering your home, you'll receive his picture on your phone. It also can entertain your kids by reading them a book. The Korea Times tells us the story while this overview provides some pictures of the cute unnamed robot.

N Korea's Kim criticized at home for apology to Japan

Friday, May 7, 2004 at 04:00 JST

WASHINGTON — North Korean military hardliners have been critical of leader Kim Jong Il for apologizing to Japan for the abduction of Japanese nationals, a U.S. expert who visited North Korea in April said.

This makes it difficult for the North Korean leader to make a decision to break the impasse over the abduction issue with Japan, said Selig Harrison, Asian project director at the Washington-based Center for International Policy. He said the hardliners were angry because they think North Korea should never apologize to Japan, which colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. (Kyodo News)

Thank you Kim Jong Il. Japan has done many things that I think requires apologies, but the abductions of Japanese by the North Koreas is an issue that I believe required an apology. I think this is a important first step, even if it is causing him some grief at home. I'm not sure what these means from a diplomatic tactics perspective, but I think Kim Jong Il deserves some credit on this one.

One of the major new features in ASP.NET 2.0 is data-driven site navigation. You start by providing an XML site map detailing your site's structure. Then you add a SiteMapDataSource control to the page and bind it to a TreeView or Menu control to produce a navigation UI. The SiteMapDataSource control reads the XML site map and provides the data to the TreeView or Menu as well as to any SiteMapPath controls also present in the page

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

What's a namber? A namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For example, 65 is drum, and 181 is push. A namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is earth .frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides translation and forwarding to the real IP address.
