The Joy of K5: Recipes
The Joy of K5: Recipes
12/17/2004 06:40 PMAs many of you have noticed, there has been a deluge of recipes and
food related stories. It's as if a floodgate of anecdotal recipes and
comments has been unleashed upon the queue. Both balsamic vinigga's
and Trollaxor's stubble stories were meant to discourage this swell of
Christmas time cheer. Now, I present for the meek, scared of
e-backlash, a guide to making your very own K5 recipe from scratch.

How to Publish Recipes Online
01/05/2003 08:07 AMHow to Publish Recipes Online
I've become fairly addicted to finding recipes with Google and from
lots and lots of time looking for recipes I have two tips on how to
publish them. (And, yes, this qualifies as my bizarro / random post
of the day). Yes I know no one will listen but doing this makes me
feel like I've done my part. :-)
Publish only 1 recipe per web page. Why? Well let's say that you are
searching for a recipe that uses blueberries and cream cheese. If you
have multiple recipes per page then a Google search will turn up web
pages where all the recipes inclde those ingredients but not
necessarily a single recipe. (I saw a web page where one recipe had
blueberries in it and another recipe had clotted cream but I didn't
find the scone recipe I was looking for).
Put the term "Recipe" somewhere on the web page with the recipe. This
means that people can more easily find it by appending "recipe" to
their search. It also means that people won't find food for sale with
those ingredients.
Here's a site that seems to do a pretty good job. [_Go_]

11/11/2002 06:02 AMWeb programming is probably why you’re reading this book. It’s why
the first version
of PHP was written and what continues to make it so popular today. PHP
makes
it easy to write dynamic web programs that do almost anything. Other
chapters
cover various PHP capabilities, like graphics, regular expressions,
database access,
and file I/O. These capabilities are all part of web programming, but
this chapter
focuses on some web-specific concepts and organizational topics that
will make your
web programming stronger.

suppose that depends on how much you eat and how bad the cramps get.

10/29/2003 12:10 AM Photographs of
this year’s harvest.
This marks a first for my friend Noël, at least as
proprietor of his own cave (previous posts on the matter here and here), construction
of which was just finishing as the grapes rolled in. The new winery
still has no name, though that has more to do with the pleasures of
navigating French bureaucracy than anything else.
Everyone seems to agree this was a good season,
grape-juice-wise: very little disease in the vines hereabouts, and
this year’s, um, diverse weather may have caused untold mayhem,
but it was conducive to good plonk.
Most notable, of course, is that I got to ride the machine.

Chilean versus California wine
Chilean versus California wine
02/01/2005 09:38 PMWine down here in Chile ranges in price from $1 to $3 per bottle. I've
been drinking these and some luxury ($7) Chilean wines and, to my
uneducated palette, they compare favorably to wines tasted in
California's Napa Valley on a recent long weekend out there. The
Napa wines were $30-50/bottle. So the question for the wine
experts reading this is... why would anyone buy wine from Napa, where
a small bit of land for a house is almost $1 million? One would
naively suppose that grapes and wine produced on some of the world's
most expensive real estate would be a bad bargain. We don't buy
apples from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We don't buy
oranges from Beverly Hills. Why does it make sense to buy wine
from what is now a Bay Area suburb? Couldn't a winery in a place
where real estate and labor are cheaper (e.g., Australia, Argentina,
Chile, etc.) always produce a much better wine for any given price?
