Sony's entertainment business is killing
its electronics business
Sony's entertainment business is killing
its electronics business
05/11/2004 01:58 AMDerek Slater takes Sony to task over its new music-download service
and iPod-like player.
Sony's acquisition of a couple of minor entertainment companies has
had untold consequences. It's a poison pill that is killing Sony, one
piece at a time.
Back from 1976-1984, Sony was the company that spent hundreds of
millions on the defense of its VCR, bringing it all the way to the
Supreme Court, arguing that the entertainment industry didn't have any
right to its business-model; that if new technology could make the old
business irrelevant, that was tough shit, and the movie companies
needed to stop pewling and get with the program (they did, and made
lots of money, besides).
But ever since Sony "aquired" Columbia, it's been acting like its
electronics business was a minor business unit that couldn't afford to
disrupt its precious entertainment arm (despite the fact that the
entertainment arm's contributions to Sony's bottom line are minimal
when compared to the gadget biz). When the first MP3 players appeared
in the market, from little companies like Creative Labs, Sony brought
out proprietary devices that played stupid formats like RealAudio and
OpenAG, which no one wanted to hear. On the other hand, these formats
did come with use-restrictions that kept Sony's music execs from
getting too anxious and sad.
The result was that Creative Labs, a little outfit in Singapore, ate
Sony's lunch, followed by a bunch of late diners to the table,
including a bunch of no-name Korean companies, and most recently,
Apple. Sony, who invented the walkman and made billions off of it, has
now become an irrelevant player in the personal stereo market, with a
market share that's barely a blip on the chart.
And Sony -- a company legendary for tis ability to refine its designs
to capitalize on lessons learned in the market -- keeps on repeating
the same mistakes, as Derek points out:
Apparently, Sony's hard drive player cannot play MP3s, WMA and (of
course) Apple FairPlay-locked AAC. It only plays the Sony's
proprietary ATRAC3 format; if it's like Sony's MiniDisc players,
forcing consumers to convert to ATRAC3 also forces them to accept
certain DRM restrictions. In related news, the Washington Post and New
York Times both deemed Connect embarassing, noting its poor interface,
proprietary DRM format and codec, copying restrictions ... too many to
count.

TRANSCENDING THE TECHNOLOGY CONSTRAINTS
TO RAPID BUSINESS GROWTH: How Emerging

Internet Business Systems to Improve
Profits and Manage Change While Reducing
the Costs and Risks of Expansion
06/23/2004 03:08 AMIt’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of
emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large
enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and
business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival
the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed
them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the
dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive
one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as
Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in
technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to
enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving
and managing growth. Learn

Sony Cybershot DSC-T33
Sony Cybershot DSC-T33
12/28/2004 11:13 AM
Sony has released a new sleeker version of the CyberShot
DSC-T3, called the DSC-T33, in countries that aren't Japan or
the United States. Much like the DSC-T11 was the slimmer counterpart
to the DSC-T1, the new camera isn't fundamentally different internally
than its predecessor—the difference is just the casing. I have
no idea why the camera might be available in Korea, for instance, but
not other countries, but I'm sure that demand for a svelte, blue
camera will encourage someone to start importing it into the US.
Whether a Japanese importer will ship a Japanese product from Korea
to sell again in Japan is something I can't speculate on.

Oh
Sony, when you aren't acting like a blind, lumbering bastard of a
company sometimes I almost want to give you a big bear hug. Like when
you make something like this new Cybershot DSC-M1 - there's no reason
for it, you just decided to get funky, and let the engineers
take a long, deep pull off the pipe before starting to design it. It's
not the specs that really get me, I guess - it's just a 5.1-megapixel
camera that scrounges parts from the DSC-T1 - it's just all the weird
features, like the four shutter buttons and dual-microphone stereo
sound recording. And the new MPEG4 video implementation (although in
truth, I really don't care much about solid-state camcorders, at least
not using expensive Memory Sticks).

Anyway, I was looking at the Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 -- the new one

-- and just noticed for the first time that you can replace the lenses
on this model. I don't know if that's a new thing for this body of
Cybershot, but either way it's pretty great. The P150 just went from
'considering' to 'probably' on my personal buy list (I'm in the market
for a camera).
Sorry the picture is so small. Apparently Sony isn't as proud of
their lens as I am.

You know, this whole having
a social life thing is not conducive at all to cooking you kids your
gadget breakfast. Fortunately for me, Panasonic and Sony have provided
some low-hanging fruit this morning with the launch of several new
digital cameras, including a really nice looking CyberShot [pictured]
with a 7-megapixel sensor. And by "nice looking" I mean "pretty
cheap," as Sony plans to launch the DSC-P150 for less than $500. I was
almost going to buy a camera today, but now I may end up waiting a
bit.
Panasonic's 5 new Lumix models look decent, too, with 3.4- to

The Latest Techie Complaints
The Latest Techie Complaints
04/15/2004 01:02 PMSo what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must
have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed
a few of his tech complaints into a single
column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together.
The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes,
it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger
company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's
increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search
engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best
part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after
the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you
connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a
fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out
people's complaining nature.

FCC Swamped By Number Portability
Complaints
01/29/2004 03:49 AMBy this point, it's pretty well known that wireless number portability
didn't
go so smoothly over the past couple of months. However, now the
FCC has admitted the extent of the problems, saying that they've
recei
ved 4,750 complaints concerning number portability. Considering
the total number of switchers, that's really not a huge percentage -
but it still doesn't speak well to the efforts the wireless carriers
put into the process. The FCC is now looking to see if any
regulations were broken. Considering that many carriers were clearly
dragging their feet on getting ready for this (partly as a ploy to ask
for more delays), it seems likely that the FCC will fine a few
carriers for screwing around when they should have been preparing (as
we
expected
back in May). It still seems like a strategically backwards move not
to have embraced something that customers clearly wanted - and which
was clearly going to come sooner or later.
