Undead at CTIA: ATI Imageon Reference
Platform V2
03/17/2005 03:51 AM
This might be my favorite thing at CTIA and you'll never be
able to buy it. This is the second-generation ATI Imageon reference
platform for developers, provided by ATI to phone developers to test
their software with the Imageon 3D hardware. It's sort of
huge—think paving stone size—but that's not the point. And
though the picture doesn't do it any justice, the 3D helicopter demo
running on the reference platform looking pretty great. I don't think
Imageon-based phones are going to replace the PSP or DS, but there's
no reason mobile developers need to be stuck with 2D.

iPass Shows 802.1X under Standard
Reference Platform
06/15/2004 11:54 AMiPass has demonstrated its client connecting over 802.1X on a hotspot
front-end that supports the Generic Interface Specification (GIS)
which allows co-exists with browser page logins: This marks a big leap
forward in security of local network links in public places. By
providing the iPassConnect client with the ability to use secured
802.1X/EAP transactions to gain access to a hotspot network, iPass
customers can have a unique key assigned to their network link. This
prevents sniffers from using the wireless side of the network to snoop
on traffic. iPass developed GIS as a way of securing an authentication
session, but the more generic 802.1X protocol coupled with secured EAP
is a simpler and more industry standard way to provide access to a
Wi-Fi network. iPass's demo shows that GIS, 802.1X, and browser-based
logins can co-exist which makes it easier for hotspot operators to
migrate customers over time to more secure logins and sessions. The
weak link in 802.1X/EAP is that while it provides a unique encryption
key to each user in its most useful form, because users are then
routed onto a wired network to reach the Internet, if a user can join
the network, they can still sniff bridged traffic from the wired side
because they're part of the local area network. Some access points can
be configured to disable LAN access and only allow Wi-Fi clients to
reach the wide area network or Internet feed....

03/17/2005 03:00 AMClay begins a segment on tech and education. He says he thinks of his
group at NYU as "The Department of the Recently Possible." A few years
ago they noticed that students were increasingly integrating phones
into their apps. So they started looking into it. One experiment:
PacManhattan that mates the urban grid and the game grid. The runners

DodgeBall was an experiment in mobile social networking. "Mobile

Tech As A Platform
Cellular Security Cameras: Mobile Phone
Tech As A Platform
09/23/2004 11:18 AMWhile it may seem a bit strange to some to find out that
Nokia is launching a
security camera product, it does signal the realization that the
technology used on cellular networks isn't just about mobile phones --
but can be seen as a platform for other devices and applications.
While we have no idea if the cellular camera idea makes sense or will
be even remotely successful for Nokia (seems unlikely), it's basically
using the same technology found in many camera phones. It has a
camera, a GSM radio and MMS capabilities. It detects motion and sends
an MMS video to either a mobile phone or email. This is just finding
a new, non-phone application for technologies that already exist.
It's about viewing the technologies as a platform, and then looking
for applications to build on top of it.

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AMIt seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach
the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their
motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank
wanted to
reach
a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled
explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the
internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier.
TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about
"media literacy" which claims its looking for a
"
middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open
and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter
everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle
ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the
internet as is, and that there should be a separate
internet that is
more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and
acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is
mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a
fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is
designed from the wrong mindset. The internet
is
not a content platform, but a communications one. This
article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform --
for the sake of the content providers.
