It was just a few years ago that the conventional wisdom was that Microsoft had won the OS war, won the browser war and (most convincingly of all) won the office productivity suite war. It looks like they're facing increasing competition on all of those fronts - but the most surprising may be the office productivity suite arena. Star Office/Open Office has gotten plenty of attention, but recently we saw IBM launch their own hosted suite but the biggest opportunities may be outside the US. Already, there are stories about China, Japan and Korea working on alternative operating systems and applications to get out from under the Microsoft thumb, and now Evermore is launching the latest version of their EI Office suite which is specifically targeted at the Chinese market. They offer versions of the software in Simplified Chinese, American English and Japanese. The one area where they might be causing themselves trouble is with the price. They offer two options: rentals at $99/year or $249 for 3 years - which isn't all that different from Microsoft's own pricing. If they really want to cause trouble, they should under price Microsoft.

It took Gus Tsao nearly nine years to raise enough money to launch his China-based technology startup, Evermore Software LLC. Now the 59-year-old immigrant is poised for an even tougher mission: beating Microsoft Corp. in the Chinese market for office software, and maybe taking a tiny bite out of the Redmond, Wash.-based giant's dominance elsewhere. "Everyone thinks I'm crazy to take on Microsoft, but China is not going to pay Microsoft forever with their prices," Tsao said.

The Wuxi City, China, company plans to launch the product at the Demo conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, next month. Evermore Integrated Office (EIOffice) combines the components of traditional productivity suites into one application. Users launch EIOffice, not a word processor, then a spreadsheet application, then a presentation tool. Documents are stored in a single file format and the application, written in Java, runs on any operating systems that supports Java, including Windows and Linux, according to Evermore.

Chinese Theater Improvements Work -- Big
Box Office Increase
04/18/2005 08:01 AM
Last month, we noted that the movie industry in the US might want to steal a few pages from the playbook of the Chinese movie industry. While the American movie studios whine and complain that they' ll never get people to come to the movies, the Chinese movie industry (where counterfeiting movies is a much, much, much bigger problem than in the US) decided to compete by recog nizing that movie-going is a social experience and coming up with ways to improve that overall experience. Would you believe it worked? The latest studies show a huge increase in the box office take in China last year. Movies are entertainment -- but it's not just the content. If the industry worked on ways to make the movie-going experience, itself, much more enjoyable, it wouldn't matter if even they, themselves, made the content available for free download. People can drink alcohol at home, and they do, but they still go out to bars, and pay much more to do so, because it's part of the social experience. You don't see the liquor (or bar) companies freaking out about all this "home drinking."

Microsoft plans to hold its first-ever conference for Microsoft Office software developers, the company announced this week. The conference, scheduled for February 2005, is part of a growing effort by the software maker to build a thriving software development community around its popular suite of productivity software.

Though developers have been able to build custom software called macros within Office applications for years, these macros were not typically used to share data between applications. With the release of Office 2003, and its support of XML (Extensible Markup Language) that equation has changed, and the company has begun promoting Office as a platform for writing applications that are integrated with server software, says Dan Leach, group product manager with Microsoft's Information Worker Product Management Group.
