Are PDFs all that bad?

Are PDFs all that bad? 10/29/2003 01:15 AM
Jakob Nielsen is Mr. Unequivocal again on his latest alertbox: PDF: Unfit for Human Consumption. Despite that, I'm cautiously optimistic about the promised next column about making PDFs work better. One technique I like is opening PDFs in their own window, using one usability sin to cover another, since users often end up closing the browser window and thus their whole browser when a PDF file is opened. And I don't buy the Adode myth that everyone has the PDF plugin. Having done field usability tests, I've noticed more users than you might expect simply don't have the plug-in. I have no hard numbers, but keep in mind that Internet Explorer has come built into Windows for some time now, while on many computers, PDFs are still a separate download. Try telling a user to go download 8.7 Megabytes over a dialup connection. Another PDF annoyance: on Windows 2000 using roaming profiles, you have to accept the license agreement the first time you open a PDF file each session if that setting isn't saved between sessions. Occasionally, the window asking you to accept the agreement gets lost and appears to crash your browser....

CC metadata in PDFs, images with XMP 02/13/2004 06:42 PM

You can now add Creative Commons license metadata to PDFs and image files, enabled by XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platform). XMP is an open, RDF/XML-based format developed by Adobe for managing metadata embedded in files.

Please see information about Creative Commons metadata in XMP, instructions for marking files with Creative Commons metadata for users of Adobe's Creative Suite, and a "custom panel" to enhance viewing of Creative Commons metadata within Adobe apps.

We've also posted a related technology challenge: add XMP and Creative Commons licensing support to open source apps, including Open Office.

I picked up the phone, and the voice at the other end said, "Rob, can you help me with a PDF file? I can't read it." It was my Beverly Hills attorney brother, who had received a 1MB PDF file via his Web-based email client and didn't know how to download it and read it, especially since he had no Acrobot reader installed. After some mutual grumbling about Acrobat being an unnecessary step in the document-reading process, I discovered a fairly painless solution to the whole mess, thanks to a little-known program called pdftohtml.

IM in the Corporate World

"Today, IBM's IM users average about 3 million messages per day, up from 2.5 million messages per day in 2002. The company has also seen a 4 percent reduction in telephone use, and a reduction in the load on its e-mail servers.

IBM employees communicate primarily with each other, but can also communicate with certain applications. For example, Reuss-Caton says there are several apps, including a dictionary and the corporate directory, to which users can send IM queries and receive responses. For example, if Reuss-Caton queries the database with an employee name, it would return all the employee's details, including presence awareness information telling her whether that individual is online." Making OS X useful 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

This article on taming the dock looks like the solution to my frustration with OS X. I arrange my dock in much the same way shown here, with my favorite apps on one side, and the running apps on the other (though, still on the default dock), but I'm constantly hitting the wrong icon when the dock ballons up on mouseover, and I can never remember where exactly I need to point to launch an app.

I'm giving this a go and seeing how it works out. Funny how it looks a little bit like the windows start bar, isn't it?

Time Warner, Comcast Get Adelphia,
Comcast Celebrates By Turning Off DNS
04/08/2005 12:13 PM
It looks like Adelphia cable broadband customers who are about to get shifted over to Comcast have plenty of outages to look forward to. The same evening that it's announced that Time Warner and Comcast will jointly devour what's left of Adelphia for about $18 billion, Comcast had major DNS issues leaving many of their users offline. Of course, in explaining the widespread outage, Comcast is using their favorite phrase: "scheduled maintenance." That's the same thing they told me when Comcast turned off my service nearly every weekday last October. I would call every morning and be told that it was "scheduled maintenance." However, when I asked what the schedule was and if I'd have service the next day, I was told they had no idea. Apparently, it doesn't become scheduled until it actually cut you off.

Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
04/14/2005 01:21 PM
Last week, we noted that Comcast was having widespread outage problems, which they chalk ed up to "scheduled maintenance", even though no one was actually informed of said schedule ahead of time. It turns out that schedule is pretty crowded, because all week long, there have been continued reports of recurring outages all across the Comcast network. Comcast, of course, continues to be pretty much silent on the issue, leaving its increasingly fed up call center staff to deal with incredibly angry customers who feel they're getting no information at all. How hard is it to admit that they screwed up and they're working on fixing the problem? Instead of chalking it up to bogus scheduled maintenance or pretending there's nothing wrong, admit what the problem is and give people real updates. People would still be unhappy, but at least they'd feel like the company wasn't ignoring them. Of course, maybe they can't do that because Comcast staffers don't have any internet access either...

AT&T Broadband / Comcast or "I'd Rather Eat Glass"

Damn.  Last week Kasia got screwed by AT&T / Comcast.  Now its me.  Here's what happened:

  1. Come back from meeting with a client about a bunch of rather interesting stuff.  Some Inbox Buddy, some Feedster for internal use, some Frontier consulting and some miscellaneous other open source issues.
  2. Virtually no network performance at all.> 200 ms ping times, hosts not resolving, etc.  Call AT&T.
  3. Suffer thru one of the worst voice response systems I've seen in a long time.  Horrid.
  4. Reach a technician.  He makes me remove my PC from the Linksys broadband router that shields my PC from the outside world.  I'm not happy about this but a 10 Base T coupler makes it a lot easier.
  5. He tells me to restart.  I counter with "ipconfig /renew".  He shuts up.
  6. I start doing some ping tests and he's telling me that all is well and happy, frothy goodness since he can ping me fine.
  7. I start to traceroute and give him feedback about the broken routes.  I ask him:  What's an email address so I can mail it to you?  "I don't have one".  What's a hot mail account I can send it to?  "I can't give that to you either."  So I ended up reading him the bad routes.  Pathetic.  And this from a company that sucks $50 from me monthly for broadband?
  8. I finally give him the info, he checks it from there after a 5 minute hold session and B I N G O !  I was *right*.  They have a problem on their internal network and then I had to wait on hold for another 5 minutes while he filled out a trouble ticket.  Then I got the really bad news.
  9. "It'll be resolved within 72 hours.  Not necessarily fixed but hopefully a solution decided upon."  What the fsck does that mean ?  That within 3 days from now, you'll decide how to fix it and then take as long as you like?  Utterly, totally pathetic.

End result?  Over an hour of my time shot to hell simply because AT&T can't proactively monitor its own damn network.  I tell you, times like this?  I'd rather eat glass than be an AT&T customer.

Comcast Wants To Buy Mickey Mouse

Comcast Wants To Buy Mickey Mouse 02/11/2004 12:27 PM
The big surprise story of the morning is that cable giant Comcast has decided to make an unsolicited bid for Disney. Expect the AOL-Time Warner comparisons to come fast and furious, though that's a bad comparison as these are very different companies. Still, it's difficult to see this deal making too much sense for Comcast. Disney is clearly on the downswing right now, and while it can do things to save itself, tying up with Comcast probably hinders them more than helps. Still, should be an interesting battle to watch. Michael Eisner clearly doesn't want the deal (he refused to negotiate, which is why this is a hostile bid), but Eisner doesn't have the full support of his board. Also should be interesting to see if anyone else steps in with an offer as well. Should be plenty of fireworks as the struggle for Mickey begins. Update: Some are already protesting< /a> the proposed deal, saying that such media consolidation is a "threat to American democracy." I'm not quite sure how that works out, as part of the reason Disney is in trouble is that people are paying much less attention to them these days. Either way, the FCC is promising to investigate the matter - which is barely worth stating, since that's part of their job. I'd just like to say that it's not as exciting to tell people "I'm going to Comcast World!"
