HONOLULU, HAWAII -- The first-ever Trans-Pacific Open Source Software Conference (TPOSSCON) was held at the Hawaii Convention Center January 17 - 21, 2005. In many ways, it was a "pilot project" meant to gain credibility for what organizer Scott Belford of the Hawaii Open Source Education Foundation (HOSEF) hopes will become a yearly event that attracts people not only from Pacific Islands but also from "mainland" countries on both sides of the world's largest ocean.

TORONTO -- Day 2 of the KMDI Open Source conference started with Robert F. Young, cofounder of Red Hat, Inc. presenting a positive view about open source business models. At the end of a conference day lasting nearly 13 hours, Young returned to deliver the conference's keynote address. In between, Jason Matusow of Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative gave attendees a very differernt point of view about the value of open source in the enterprise. No real surprises there.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Far away from the usual open source software industry focus on code, freedom, and evangelism, the InnoTech conference and expo held here this week centered on the business of open source for business' sake. Sure there was talk about the advantages of Linux and open source technology, the ability to impact operating system-level functionality, and fighting unwarranted fears of a different model, but the heart of the conference was the beat of business -- cutting costs, driving value, and saving time and grief.

Saudi open source conference opens minds

Saudi open source conference opens minds 01/16/2004 11:32 AM
Riyadh -- It was a small, one-day conference aimed at government and industry IT heads. I counted a maximum of 127 men in the auditorium. A few women attended, but in accordance with Saudi tradition they were in a separate room, watching through closed-circuit TV. Two easily-identified Microsoft trolls were also in the main auditorium audience, asking the same questions Microsoft hirelings ask at open source conferences all over the world, but they didn't make much headway.

Dan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to hire them.

That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.

Open source appears challenged by patents but that fear is often exaggerated. Lawrence Rosen, technology attorney and author of "Open Source Licensing: Software Freedom and Intellectual Property Law" (Prentice Hall, 2004), offers a calming view of the patent situation. He describes reasonable steps we can take to prevent patents from interfering with software freedom.

Two Great Events! MySQL User's Conference and Open Source Content Management (OSCOM) Well it looks like April will be a very good month. There's: MySQL User's Conference -- April 10-12, 2003 [_Go_] Open Source Content Management -- April 16-18, 2003 [_Go_] Sigh. No way to be at both and it looks like I'm probably a speaker on Drupal at OSCOM so it'll be less sql, more pages for me. We're still working out what to talk about but I suspect (or hope at least) it'll be interesting.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).
