02/19/2004 04:53 PM
SAN FRANCISCO - The "tera" era of the computing world is approaching, and the semiconductor industry is going to have to rethink many of the architectural approaches it has taken to build today's processors in order to handle the vast datasets of the future, said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Intel Corp., in a keynote address Thursday at the Spring Intel Developer Forum here.

USATODAY.com - Yesterday I stood inside what is probably the world's third-most-powerful supercomputer - the Terascale Computing Facility at Virginia Tech. (I say "probably" because the testing won't be done till next week - the Department of Defense is using it right now and can't be interrupted.) It's composed of 1100 Macintosh G5 computers running in parallel.

Intel's Uh-Oh

Intel's Uh-Oh 09/03/2004 12:06 PM
  • Mercury News (reg req): Intel forecast rattles stocks. In an ominous sign for Silicon Valley's fragile recovery, Intel slashed its revenue forecast Thursday amid falling worldwide demand for computer chips.
  • This is disturbing, but not a sign of doom. Intel has been having more troubles lately than just customer demand, including a surprising number of internal miscues leading to delayed products. Still, Silicon Valley is holding its breath at the moment. Is the recovery going to be sustained, much less sustainable? My gut tells me that doom-and-gloom is a little too pessimistic right now. A lot is going right around the valley these days. My bet is that this is more a hiccup than a serious stumble.
