Jeremy sez, "A St. John's University law student created a p2p network allowing users to share government documents. Over 600 court and government documents such as memos, communications and reports can be accessed through the Kazaa, LimeWire and Soulseek p2p networks. The Abu Ghraib prison memos and the Senate Intelligence Committee report on government intelligence leading up to the Iraq War are included. It would be nice to see this collection of useful, informative and sometimes embarrassing documents grow. It might also give Washington more fodder for legal maneuvers against p2p." Builder.com: API Docs with phpDocumentor 09/08/2004 09:14 AM
Thankfully, PHP code is some of the easiest to write (of the web scripting languages I've worked with). Unfortunately, documentating it is just as much of a pain as it is with any other language. And, this Builder.com article puts it well: Developers and documentation are like oil and water - they just don't mix well. Many developers find writing documentation to be a boring waste of time. It's no wonder, then, that most companies hire separate personnel to create technical documentation rather than try to persuade developers and programmers to do it themselves.

Blosxom Plug-in Docs

Blosxom Plug-in Docs 03/11/2003 09:43 AM
After much ado and not a small amount of fiddling and honing over the past couple of evenings, I've a version of Blosxom 2.0b and sample plugins I'm ready to start seeding.

Despite expecting it to be in flux for a while, I wanted the first version of the Blosxom Plugins API to be good enough to provide a nice starting point for discussion and further development.

I've some mild cleanup to do on the beta release and anticipate finishing up and putting out a package Thursday evening.

I spent this evening massaging the zen of Blosxom plug-ins into some decent documentation rather than simply leaving interested parties to muddle through the source. I believe I've done a rather decent job on them, but if you notice anything confusing, missing, or just plain odd, please do let me know. You'll find the docs here.

AP - They say film doesn't lie, but does that mean it tells the truth? The public sees fleeting videotaped images of Terri Schiavo, appearing to many to turn toward her mother's voice and smile. They hear what sound like moans and laughter. They watch her head move up and down, seemingly following the progress of a brightly colored Mickey Mouse balloon. And often they ask: How could anyone conclude but that she is aware of her surroundings?

03/06/2004 01:53 AM
PHP 5 and the integrated Zend Engine 2 have greatly improved PHP's performance and capabilities, but great care has been taken to break as little existing code as possible. So migrating your code from PHP 4 to 5 should be very easy. Most existing PHP 4 code should be ready to run without changes, but you should still know about the few differences and take care to test your code before switching versions in production environments. -- Nuno Lopes

Andi Gutman points this out:

>Paragraph: Classes must be declared before used >is no longer true. For most cases this is allowed now.

To be accurate, we solved the BC issue but for people who want to use the PHP 5 features (such as implementing interfaces), they will have to declare the class before using it.

Pixel-counting can un-redact government
docs
05/10/2004 03:02 PM
A Luxembourgian/Irish security research team have presented a paper on a technique for identifying words that have been blacked out of documents, as when government docs are published with big strikethroughs over the bits that are sensitive to national security. The technique doesn't work on monospace fonts like Courier, but the State Department's recent font guidelines require that all docs be published in Times New Roman, which decodes like a charm.
hey found the number of pixels that had been blacked out in the sentence: "An Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) operative told an xxxxxxxx service at the same time that Bin Ladin was planning to exploit the operative's access to the U.S. to mount a terrorist strike." They then used a computer to determine the pixel length of words in the dictionary when written in the Arial font.

The program rejected all of the words that were not within three pixels of the length of the word that was probably under the blacked-out area in the document.

The software then reduced the number of possible words to just seven from 1,530 by using semantic guidelines, including the grammatical context. The researchers selected the word "Egyptian" from the seven possible words...
