We're not the only country that is still in love with the
Nintendo Entertainment System. To complement the Famicom TV Remote
Control (the NES was the Famicom in Japan), Banpresto is offering
the Official Famicom Cashbox, a piggy bank that plays back one of four
tunes when coins are inserted.

12/02/2003 01:43 AMRoy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has
sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating
detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss
it
has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the
ABC
Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will
continue
to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.
2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with
the
resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.
3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At
Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have
tried to
build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures
reflect it.

02/13/2004 08:06 PMFriday afternoon merger speculation... As everyone waits to hear who
really is bidding on AT&T Wireless, another story is popping up
wondering if
Micros
oft might come in and make a bid on Disney, now that Comcast has
put Disney (involuntarily) in play. While it wouldn't be a surprise
if others made offers on Disney, and Microsoft
could easily
afford them, I don't think Microsoft would dare do such a deal. I
think they're smart enough to know that it would have a very high
likelihood of causing more problems than it helped them solve. It
would definitely take them off of their current focus, and they've
shown no inclination to do that. Besides, as the article points out,
Microsoft already own 7.4% of Comcast, and would own 4% of Disney
should that deal go through - giving them plenty of influence. In
other words... there's really nothing to this story other than idle
speculation on a Friday afternoon.

A Disney Computer?
A Disney Computer?
08/05/2004 03:50 AMThe Walt Disney Company hasn't been particularly friendly with the
tech industry lately, but maybe that's because they think technology
is easy. They've apparently decided that, despite the general trouble
most companies seem to have with selling PCs, Disney can do better
selling their own PC for kids. It will, of course, come
with all sorts of "proprietary programs" (would you expect anything
else?) and something called "ContentProtect" which is apparently an
email and internet filter (makes sense for a kid's computer). Of
course, it's unclear how much control the parents will have over that
filter or if it's a Disney-knows-best sort of thing. Also, the
software will let kids create videos of themselves with the Disney
characters, though it seems likely that these will be seriously locked
down with copy protection, because who knows what someone might do if
they could send around their own videos with Mickey... Of course, if
that happened, Disney would probably just call up some of their
friends in Congress to pass a special law just for them, while getting
the FBI to bust down some doors as well.

Disney and RSS enclosures: 2 m served!
02/11/2004 09:40 AMExcellent!
Ross
Mayfield also reports (via a presentation by Disney execs) on
Disneys use of weblogs and wikis. Very interesting stuff.
It seems that Disney is using RSS enclosures on a huge scale to
distribute video:
Using RSS Enclosures to deliver video to 2 million broadband
users. Some argue that enclosures don't scale and their not enough
bandwidth, but >500M videos have been delivered in less than one
year an have been able to scale bandwidth to demand, now moving
towards caching at the edge. Most of the delivery is off-peak hours,
especially from them to the cable head end, so bandwidth cost is
nominal. P2P like Bittorrent and others may broaden
this.
Wow! This is great,It closely parallels our
discussion yesterday! Disney is really on the cutting
edge. This would be very fun to work on. Given that they
use Newsgator, it is likely that Greg may be selling us a bittorrent
interface soon.

Disney parks are no-fly zones
Disney parks are no-fly zones
03/19/2003 10:45 PM The new Orange Alert aviation regs have created a no-fly-zone around
Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The new regulations in effect create a no-fly zone around Disney
World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
Unless pilots are granted specific exemptions from air traffic
controllers, no flights are allowed within a 3-mile radius around the
parks or below 3,000 feet.
Government officials said the Disney restrictions are not based on any
specific or new information, but rather stem from a general concern
about those two locations as possible terror targets.
Counterterrorism officials said the Disney parks have come up in
interviews with al Qaeda operatives. Pictures and information about
the parks have been found during some terror sweeps overseas, they
say...
Disney spokeswoman Leslie Goodman said the latest airspace restriction
is nothing new and expressed concern the latest restriction is
unnecessarily worrying visitors. She complained Disney's phones have
been ringing off the hook with anxious vacationers calling.
So there's a real possible upside to all the terrornoia: I might get
shorter lines when I visit Disneyland next.
