LucasArts has churned out a number of titles from the Star Wars universe, some better than others. Their latest effort is Star Wars Republic Commando, which is a change of pace for a number of reasons.

In many ways though, this is a radical departure from other Star Wars games. You’ll never see a single light saber. You’ll never see a Jedi in action, or use a force power. To the clone troopers the Jedi were simply generals, giving them orders from afar. In the brief moment you see Yoda near the end of the game your team reacts with something approaching awe.

No light sabers?!?

Strange how Kenner considered it integral that the Star Wars line had two different Bespin Security Guards for better army building, yet some how figured that having only one Rebel Commando was acceptable for the Trilogy’s final ground battle. Whatever the toy maker’s reasons were, at least today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive had his trusted pal Prune Face and no less than eight Ewoks to help a pitiful little band defeat an entire legion of the Emperor’s best troops.

OK, an initial implementation of my preview required functionality is complete.  Other than requiring a preview, most of you should not see any different behavior.  I've also relaxed my spam throttle to allow three comments - this allows the first to go through and two warnings before someone is temporarily shut down.

Now I plan to watch and see what action is warranted next.

If you've been following the search engine wars, the latest craze the kids are into these days is providing thumbnails of the web sites that return in search results. Google, however, sticking to the 'less is more' approach, doesn't have this feature. Chu Yeow points us to a Firefox extension that changes all of that.

What is it?
A Mozilla Firefox 0.9+ browser extension that inserts preview images (thumbnails) of web sites, Amazon products and stock charts into the Google search results page.

It sounds like one of those things that would be very slow, but I was suprised to find that the extension doesn't seem to slow the rendering of the search page down at all. It contacts a service on the web to get the thumbnails rather than trying to generate them on the fly. Very cool.

PC World pimps its most-likely-to-succeed gadget list for a Consumer Electronics Show preview:

· The Jabra headset is the first* LCD bluetooth ear-thingey talker; not outrageously priced at $119 either.
· Lexar's JumpDrive Lightning (in 1 gig and 2 gig capacities) is extremely, extremely shiny, and we like it just because of that. Besides, you could blind assailants with it if used properly.
· Axion is pushing the DVD-integrated LCD TV's. (We're pushing a nice flat-screen coupled with the current crop of hybrid Tivo/DVDs, so we aren't totally feeling it—unless the price is right.)

*Update: Okay, the second, after the Sony HBH-600. Bad Jabra!

Over two hundred and fifty fans, braved the autumn-tinged air of White Marsh, Maryland to attend the Best Buy Midnight Madness event. Joined by local radio station 98Rock and the 501st Squadron, fans were treated to music, free Battlefront T-shirts (for the first 50 in line) and prizes. The biggest prize was the shared interest in the Star Wars Trilogy and the opportunity to own one of the first copies when the clock struck 12:01am on Sept. 21.

It was disappointing to hear Terry Gross let Karen Hughes off the hook in her Fresh Air interview. Hughes said something like, "When people talk about this administration being secretive, I think they actually mean that there aren't many leaks." Then Hughes gave an example of a leak that did damage. "No," Terry didn't say, "That's not what we mean. We mean that Cheney won't release the names of the people he consulted with about energy policy..." and then she didn't go on from there....
