11/05/2003 10:58 AMThe data from the open-source project to map the human genome and
release it to the public domain has put the genome online.
Ensembl presents up-to-date sequence data and the best possible
annotation for metazoan genomes. Available now are human, mouse, rat,
fugu, zebrafish, mosquito, Drosophila, C. elegans, and C. briggsae,
Others will be added soon.

Genome of human zit sequenced
Genome of human zit sequenced
07/30/2004 12:12 PMScientists have sequenced the genome of the bug that causes zits. It
had previously been mistaken for a part of the human genome.
“Sequencing the whole genome has revealed that the bacterium can
actively degrade human skin tissue because of the massive presence of
these enzymes, and also that there are specific immunogenic proteins
which are present in this bacterium which trigger the immune
response,” Brüggemann told New Scientist....
Severe acne is usually treated with common antibiotics, but many
strains are becoming resistant to these. “With the genome
sequence it’s now quite easy to generate specific drugs against
this bacterium,” says Brüggemann. “That’s the
next task.”

into cells, chromosomes, genes, chromatin loops, nucleosomes, and
more. The Chromosome Browser, a second tour, supplies key information
about different chromosomes and profiles important genes in the human
genome. This website also links to other sections of the larger Human

I wrote a piece for TheFeature about RedTacton, a personal area
networking (PAN) technology that makes use of the electrical field
that naturally surrounds the human body.
NTT believes there are many uses for RedTacton beyond
being a replacement for certain Bluetooth or IR applications. It could
for example, be used as a kind of RFID. When you touch a door handle
at a secure facility, the RedTacton transceiver would look at the ID
number stored in the mobile device in your pocket and decide whether
or not to let you in. Or a bottle of medicine might sound an alarm if
you are not the person to whom the pills have been prescribed.

Panning for Gold in the Maize Genome
12/22/2003 10:09 PM"Panning for Gold" in the Maize Genomehttp://www.nsf
.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?pr03148Decoding of a
variety of plant genomes could accelerate due to two complementary
methods that remove from analysis vast stretches of DNA that do not
contain genes. The approaches, applied jointly in efforts to determine
the gene sequences in maize, are described in the Dec. 19 issue of the
journal Science. The evaluation of these methods and the assembly of
the resulting sequences were undertaken by two groups led by
researchers from The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in
Rockville, Md., and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.
The research was funded by the National Science Foundation's
Plant Genome Research Program. Only about a quarter of the maize
genome codes for genes, and these are found in small clusters
scattered through a mixture of non-coding DNA and transposons (mobile
DNA segments). Two different methods tested by the TIGR group
successfully captured parts of the maize genome containing genes. The
gene-sequences are of most interest because they provide the specific
blueprint for an organism’s development, structure and physiology.
With so much non-gene sequence to deal with, it has not been feasible
to sequence and assemble the whole maize genome with current
technologies. Thus, it is a major shortcut to capture only the portion
of the maize sequence containing its genes without having to sequence
the entire genome.
"Collecting the maize genes for
sequencing is like panning for gold," said Jane Silverthorne, program
director for NSF's plant genome program. "Just as gold can be
separated from the surrounding rock because it is denser, maize genes
can be separated from the surrounding DNA by their chemical and
sequence properties."
