MacArthur grants: study intellectual
property, public domain
03/13/2003 10:16 AM

The MacArthur Foundation issued two large grants for scholarly research into current intellectual property (IP) issues .

One, for $600,000, is to the American Association for the Advancement of Science ( AAAS ), in support of research into "examining intellectual property policies and their potential impact on scientific research and innovation".

"We have been looking for an appropriate balance between the interests of the public and its need for access to information, and the interests of those who produce and publish that scientific information... These grants will allow us to expand our approach so that we can address the impacts of both copyright and patenting on access to and use of scientific information."
A second grant, for $250,000, goes to the National Research Council , at the science-focused National Academies ( NAS ), to support "its efforts to promote open access to and the preservation of a public domain in scientific and technical data internationally." (The NAS has published a recent report on technology and education.)

The MacArthur Foundation has a history of, and program for supporting IP research. In July of 2002 it released four grants totalling $2.5 million, for research on the internet and intellectual property . In September of this year, the Foundation awarded one of its Fellows Grants , or "genius grants" to Cornell 's Paul Ginsparg, for his work on arXiv , an open-source scholarly archive for scientific research .

The Rockefeller Foundation launched a related initiative in November, aimed at developing new fair use policies to mitigate the digital divide .

My cattle grazing grounds are not my idea and vice versa. But thanks to laws I can "own" the idea as if the idea was a cow ; link goes to a interesting university-level paper [PDF]. The author makes some interesting analysis and points attention to the fact that current intellectual property laws can go against well established economic theories at the expense of free market competition theory, technical innovations and society-as-a-whole best interest.

Recommended to people with economic theory experience , but also to everyday public-goods-privatization opposers as the paper isn't (intentionally) way too technical.

Intellectual Property industries?

Intellectual Property industries? 04/09/2004 04:03 PM
This Department of Justice press release announcing the creation of an Intellectual Property Task Force is an amazing example of the extremist rhetoric that has come to dominate discussion of digital content protection.  Yes, those who create digital goods are entitled to compensation, and violating intellectual property rights, like speeding, is against the law.  But the way this issue is being cast as a challenge to our way of life is just excessive and counter-productive.

My favorite is the statement that "
Intellectual property industries play a significant role in the American economy."  What exactly is an "intellectual property industry?" More to the point, what isn't?  I doubt Wal-Mart would be very successful if others could copy its name in misleading ways, or could reprint its newspaper ads with higher prices.

Of course, that's not what the press release is talking about.  The term is intended to redefine industries built around creative acts (like the music business) as industries based on exclusive formalizations of past creativity.  Larry Lessig and others have said this better than I can, but the point remains important.  Countless small rhetorical shifts have brought us to a point where the discourse around intellectual property is wildly foreign to our professed values.  Are our heros the pioneers who charted new territory... or the land speculators who came later?

The Canadian Legion sells plasic poppies every year to raise money for charitable causes. This week, Peter Underhill of the Canadian Legion left this on Pia's public guestbook:

I tried your contact email but the address wouldn't copy. The "Poppy" is a trademark registered to the Royal Canadian Legion. Please remove reference to Poppy on the Poppy Hat. Thank you for your consideration. P. Underhill
If the Legion thinks that shaking down craftspeople on bogus trademark claims is the way to create goodwill for its causes, it's got another think coming. Link (Thanks, Richard!)

Ribbon Dancer robot

Ribbon Dancer robot 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

At Gel, Bruce Shapiro, artist in residence at the Science Museum of Minnesota, talked about his notion of "motion control" as an "emerging medium for artistic expression". As his website explains, motion control is a "term used to describe a variety of techniques for orchestrating the movement of machinery and objects".

One of the machines he brought to demonstrate its artistic expression was Ribbon Dancer. The willowy one-armed robot performed a routine for us for a couple minutes to a classical piece of music. Near the end of the piece, the ribbon got hung up on the lower part of the apparatus while the arm kept going with the routine, tugging obliviously on the caught fabric. The crowd gasped. For a second there, we thought the arm was going to pull the whole thing over -- not unlike the robot-like AT-AT that got tripped up by a Rebel harpoon on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back -- but Bruce stepped in to stop the machine and free the ribbon. Despite the mistake, the crowd's emotional reaction to the dancer's potentially hazardous misstep demonstrated the potential for the acceptance of artistic expression by machines.

(And in a somewhat more disturbing demonstration of the dancer's representation of life, when Bruce stopped it at the end of the routine and began to walk off the stage, it began to twitch awkwardly from some stray electrical signals, a death rattle of sorts. Bruce leapt back on stage and pulled the plug; the twitching abruptly stopped and the arm fell slack atop the metal shaft, like he'd killed it.)

USB Cable Bag

USB Cable Bag 06/17/2005 06:12 PM

mfc-0027.JPG.jpgReader Kurt sent us this odd duck: It contains just about every connector you could ever need, including USB to Ethernet (??) and USB to phone jack (??) adapters. If anyone can figure out why you'd need those two jacks, please let me know.

Then there's the weird headphone jack thing. What's that all about? Generally, there are a few very useful things in here like the Firewire to Firewire and USB to USB cables—which you can't find anywhere—but the rest of that stuff looks like a mistake.

UPDATE - Justin says...

Many companies use “proprietary” cables to connect PC’s to their equipment, I have an APC UPS that connects to my pc with an Ethernet to USB cable. I’ve also seen the same with RJ-11 to USB on some quirky devices such as room temperature monitors.

Also, it appears that there are two Ethernet headers in there, so you can make your own Ethernet cable. I get it now.

Cable a la Carte

Cable a la Carte 07/15/2004 03:19 AM

Cable the way you want it, has been a topic of discussion here a number of times. The House of Representatives had hearings today on the topic. The big cable companies obviously don't want to give consumers the right to do this claiming that overall cost will go up. I think consumers are personally tired of paying for channels that have infomercials on them half of the time. Small independent cable companies are willing to give consumers what they want if the Big Cable companies let them. [Wired]
