Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom 01/03/2004 07:20 PM

I finally got around to reading Cory Doctorow's novella, "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom." It's quite good, and he's got it posted for free on his Web site (in no less than 17 different formats). You may know Doctorow know from Boing Boing fame.

If you've been to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, the book will mean more to you because it revolves around the park. It's set in a future where bodies are cloned and if you die, you just restore a clone from backup. Consequently, you lose everything since your last backup. I have to admit that I'll never look at backups quite the same way again.

Another central concept (borrowed from blogrolls, perhaps), is "Whuffie." There is no money in this world, everything is bought by reputation. The more people like you, the more Whuffie you have, the more power you have. When you meet someone new, you "ping their Whuffie," to see if they're worth your time.

The actual plot revolves around The Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom and the "ad hoc" political groups that have formed to manage them like little countries. The group managing the Hall of Presidents has designs on taking over The Haunted Mansion. Intrigue ensues.

It's short — you can put it away in a couple of hours. It's winning some great sci-fi awards as well. Worth checking out.

I watch the Internet Archive's Open Source Audio area for material that could be used for legal remixes including spoken word audio. In wonderful news, this morning's postings include Andrew Levine's audio reading of the first chapter to Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. The book had been available online under a somewhat restrictive CC in text format for a while but Cory recently loosened the reins and the artistic community seems to be responding.

My novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, has made the Amazon and Chapters/Indigo editors' picks lists for best science fiction novels of 2003. Also, it's only three recommendations short of making the preliminary Nebula ballot (any SFWA members out there who dug the book?). Oh yah, and the Livejournal people are considering adding Whuffie to their system. Killer news, all 'round. (Thanks, Amanda and Bo and Micah!)

Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AM
Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.

"From this time on, participants will be known as 'words.' They are not understood as carriers or agents of the texts they bear, but as its embodiments. As a result, injuries to the printed texts, such as dermabrasion, laser surgery, tattoo cover work or the loss of body parts, will not be considered to alter the work. Only the death of words effaces them from the text. As words die the story will change; when the last word dies the story will also have died. The author will make every effort to attend the funerals of her words."

Is The Human Billboard Tattoo Working?

Is The Human Billboard Tattoo Working? 12/09/2003 03:51 AM
During the boom years, Outpost.com had a commercial where they joked about tattooing the outpost.com log on the heads of babies to "get 'em while they're young." Real life imitated satire last year when people started offering to auction off various body parts for advertising tattoos on eBay. However, it sounds like companies were still a bit wary of agreeing to dot com style stunts. That phase passed, however, and in April, a man successf ully sold the back of his head for an advertising tattoo for $7,000 (for five years, which seems like a pretty cheap deal for all involved). At the time, we pointed out that the hype surrounding the story from the company (CI Host) seemed a bit overblown. They claimed that it was making news everywhere - but the only news we could find (and we're pretty good at finding news around here) was the press release the company issued. So, 9 months later, I'm going to take their claims with a grain of salt when they say that the advertising campaign of the man walking around with the CI Host logo tattooed to his head has directly led to 500 new customers. Signing up for a webhost isn't exactly an impulse buy - and in the rare instance where it is an impulse buy, it's because you're sitting at a computer and have a domain name you want to host. You don't see a strange man with a corporate tattoo on his head walking down the street, and suddenly decide it's time to rush home and sign up with that company to host your website. Well, at least I wouldn't.

Comcast Wants To Buy Mickey Mouse

Comcast Wants To Buy Mickey Mouse 02/11/2004 12:27 PM
The big surprise story of the morning is that cable giant Comcast has decided to make an unsolicited bid for Disney. Expect the AOL-Time Warner comparisons to come fast and furious, though that's a bad comparison as these are very different companies. Still, it's difficult to see this deal making too much sense for Comcast. Disney is clearly on the downswing right now, and while it can do things to save itself, tying up with Comcast probably hinders them more than helps. Still, should be an interesting battle to watch. Michael Eisner clearly doesn't want the deal (he refused to negotiate, which is why this is a hostile bid), but Eisner doesn't have the full support of his board. Also should be interesting to see if anyone else steps in with an offer as well. Should be plenty of fireworks as the struggle for Mickey begins. Update: Some are already protesting< /a> the proposed deal, saying that such media consolidation is a "threat to American democracy." I'm not quite sure how that works out, as part of the reason Disney is in trouble is that people are paying much less attention to them these days. Either way, the FCC is promising to investigate the matter - which is barely worth stating, since that's part of their job. I'd just like to say that it's not as exciting to tell people "I'm going to Comcast World!"

Ok, Mousekateers! Sing it with me, "M - I - C, K - E - Y, B - O - A - R - D!" :D

Banking on the huge popularity Mickey Mouse enjoys with kids worldwide, Walt Disney on Thursday unveiled a desktop PC with a monitor sporting the ears of the cartoon character.

The desktop, named Disney Dream Desk PC, has comes loaded with own-branded applications that enable children to draw, edit pictures, create music and write and direct their own movies. Its TFT (thin-film transistor) liquid-crystal display is Mickey-shaped and the computer has a mouse that is small enough for children to hold.

Disney's desktop, built by German PC maker Medion, comes with an Intel Celeron D 330 processor and a 3-D graphics card from ATI Technologies. Embedded speakers, a DVD player, a CD writer and player, and a digital pen are also included. The system is preloaded with the Windows XP operating system and software for e-mail filtering, Internet filtering and pop-up blocking.
