Child's Play Part II

Child's Play Part II 12/27/2004 03:23 PM

Last November, EGM got together a bunch of 11 and 12-year-olds and asked them their opinions of Pong, Space Invaders, and other games from our youth. Needless to say, they weren't kind.

EGM has do ne it again this year, with entertaining results.

The kids were harsh:

EGM: Before this came out in compilations, we used to put quarters in arcade machines.

Parker: You wasted quarters on this?

EGM: Yeah.

Parker: That's so sad.

They nailed a few things, though:

EGM: Do you know that in these types of games, people spend hours and hours trying to break world records.

Parker: Like that guy who beat Pac-Man? With the long beard?

Garret: Billy Mitchell.

EGM: What do you think of him?

Parker: He's a complete loser. Doesn't he have a mullet?

Garret: That's bad.

Dillon: What a freak.

Technological diffusion patterns

Technological diffusion patterns 08/09/2004 06:02 AM

I get this feeling that the diffusion of new services and technologies such as blogs and social network services are not normal. Normal diffusion patterns are sort of bell curves that track mass media attention and other factors including effort on the supply side. With social network systems, there seem to be regional explosions of users. Orkut now has more Brazilians than Americans and I have yet to hear a good explanation of why. There are very uneven proportion of bloggers in different regions. The last I looked, Poland and Iran seem to have an unnaturally high number of blogs. Does the digital word of mouth nature of social software make it's diffusion faster (viral) and non-linear? Is the diffusion of other technologies in these markets and segments that are networked also change?

Is there anyone doing good work in this area? I'm sure marketers have their theories on this. I can imagine anthropologists and sociologists also studying this. What is the right way to study this?

When I woke up this morning, the very first thought shouted at me by my brain was, "What if Death rented a room in your house?" Neil Gaiman says that most of his stories start out with "What if . . . " or "If only . . . " so I immediately wrote down my "What if . . ." . . . and didn't know what to do next. I googled for "How to write a fiction outline," and didn't really find a definitive answer. However, I came across this site, where I found this very interesting and useful post . . .

Contests as the path to solving complex
technological problems

Contests as the path to solving complex
technological problems
02/13/2004 03:48 PM
Perhaps one of the best ways to get the US economy going again is for the Government to dive into the business of contests.  Simply, cash awards to organizations that engineer and demonstrate breakthrough technology that solves specific problems.  We have seen a few minor efforts in this direction recently.  NASA has launched their "Centennial Challenges" program with $20 m for key technological breakthroughs.  DARPA is even getting into the act with a $1 m "Grand Challenge" for an autonomous ground vehicle that can navigate between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  These contests compliment the now famous privately funded X-Prize that will award $10 m to the first organization that can get 3 people to 100 km above the earth and back twice within two weeks.  What do you think about contests (or a sequence of increasingly difficult contests that build on each other) for the development of unmanned Mars missions (at much less expense than the $820 m spent on Spirit and Opportunity), extremely low cost hydrogen fuel cells, 20 hour laptop batteries that cost less than $100, and more?  In my view, a billion $$ spent this way over the next couple of years would prove true McLuhan's dictum that for every great problem there is someone that doesn't see it as a problem.

BTW: there needs to be a lot of academic work done on how to make these contests effective.
