Folllowing up on this post about Yahoo webmail users receiving upgraded storage capacity in an apparent attempt by Yahoo to compete with Gmail, Boing Boing reader Brian says, "As a member of SBC Yahoo dial-up service, I received a notice yesterday that my email account now has a 2 Gig storage capacity. Obviously, this is separate from the free web-based email service from Yahoo, but 2 Gigs is bar far the most storage available to date, worldwide."

Internet Week reports that while Microsoft is working to “protect” users from viruses and spyware, there is little it can do for those that are already affected. It is great to see Microsoft take an active stance regarding spyware and virus removal, but how about spending some those billions on the mainstream media so that the non-techies have a chance to learn that Service Pack 2 even exists. Most people I deal with don’t even…

According to Intelliseek, Yahoo News was the most cited news source on blogs in 2004. Congrats to the Yahoo News team! I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Yahoo News is very blog and aggregator friendly? They've been pumping out RSS feeds and allowing you to subscribe to a news search as RSS for a while now. I think there's a connection. I can't wait to see even more of Yahoo becoming blog and RSS...

I used to keep my grocery list on it back in 2000, but eventually gave that up for some reason. I still don't know why. I say we take it step farther and give some wiki space to every Yahoo! Group as well. I wonder how many groups would use it... Where else should Yahoo have wiki functionality...

Polaroid: Enough Shaking, Already

Polaroid: Enough Shaking, Already 02/17/2004 01:13 PM

Rob and CNN let me know about this support entry at Polaroid's web site:

Ever since the song "Hey Ya" by Andre 3000 of Outkast came out, everyone is shaking their Polaroid pictures. I have always been told that you should not shake a Polaroid picture, but I'm having a hard time convincing those around me that this is true. What is the answer?

To sum up Polaroid, shaking the picture may reduce the image quality. So deduct 10 points from Andre 3000 for making people's lousy Polaroids even lousier. (That makes him Andre 2990. Zing!)

Why Lawyers And PR Don't Mix

Why Lawyers And PR Don't Mix 03/08/2004 11:04 PM
This is not the first time it's been noted that sending in the lawyers to try to "disappear" information a company (or individual) doesn't like tends to have the opposite results. Remember Barbara Streisand trying to stop a photographer documenting coastal erosion from posting a photo of her property? Prior to that, very few people noticed the site. After the lawsuit began many more people went and saw the photo. The same sort of thing appears to be happening with Infinium Labs and HardOCP. While there was mumbling in the gaming community that Infinium's Phantom gaming console didn't really exist, not too many people were paying attention. In fact, by hiring a respected CEO the company was gaining credibility. However, now that they've been tangled up in a lawsuit for threatening HardOCP for an article that was six months old and pretty much off everyone's radar screen, the questions raised by that article are suddenly getting a lot more attention. While the lawyers may think it's best to sue, the internet makes it very likely that any lawsuits (or even threats of lawsuits) pretty much guarantee that they'll be giving whatever content they want hidden even more attention. Someone should sit some of these lawyers down with some PR people and review each and every case where this has happened.

The Lawyers and Their Money

The Lawyers and Their Money 05/12/2004 11:17 AM

This one goes into the Shameless Hall of Fame: Some of the lawyers who sued Microsoft for its predatory behavior against California customers are doing their best to fuel the public's contempt for the legal profession. They're asking for more than $250 million in fees, as the AP reports today -- "about $3,000 per hour for one lawyer, more than $2,000 an hour each for 34 other attorneys and $1,000 an hour for administrative work." This is beyond absurd. We get ripped off once by Microsoft, and now the lawyers -- whose deal with Microsoft gives precious little individual customers -- are bellying up to the trough in ways that would embarrass anyone who had an ounce of shame. The judge in this case should say no. Give the lawyers a reasonable fee, not this grotesque lottery score. It's the customers who deserve most of that money.

After The Lawyers, Can We Kill All PR
People?

After The Lawyers, Can We Kill All PR
People?
07/15/2004 02:00 PM
I would really like to believe that not all PR people are this bad, but I'm beginning to lose faith. Last year, I wrote up a longer piece about PR people who don't understand blogs and tried to do things like trick bloggers into writing about the companies they represented. I mentioned, in passing, that some PR people submit press releases to the site, even though we clearly say not to do so. I can certainly understand it if a PR person didn't happen to catch that post. However, if you're going to be in PR, and you're going to try to get blogs to write about the companies you represent, we should set some ground rules. First: Read the damn site. If we never talk about highly technical things like a new computer fan, do not try to get us to write about a new computer fan. You're wasting our time, your own time, as well as the money of the company you represent. Second: Read the damn submission page. If you're not going to understand what the site is about, at the very very least (we're not asking for much) you could read the page where you submit the press release, because it says (in bold) not to submit press releases. If you can't even bother to read that page, why should we bother to read your press release? Finally: If you're going to ignore both of these fairly simple rules, do not then claim on your own website that you are somehow "A High Tech PR Agency" or that you have "the broadest high tech PR experience of any Public Relations Agency." It's not true. If it were true, you would know not to do what you keep doing. Also, don't claim that you "did online PR before the Internet." You didn't. The internet was there before you were. This isn't difficult, but bloggers are not traditional press. While some of them may accept press releases, the fact that you can't bother to take the briefest amount of time to figure out what kind of publication we are suggests you're not so tech savvy after all.
