Open-source, collaborative Web
encyclopedia passes mileston
03/13/2003 10:16 AM

Wikipedia , an open-source, collaborative , Web-based encyclopedia passed a major milestone this week: 100,000 published articles . After two years of work, numerous volunteers in English and several other languages have created, corrected , refined, and continued to hone a growing reference source for a diverse group of topics, while starting a similarly-organized dictionary on the side.

The project uses Wiki software to create web pages which any user can edit and write to. Multiple layers of backup and the vigilance of volunteer editors ward off vandalism.

Wikipedia is a public WikiWikiWeb, a website where anyone can edit any article at any time. Users build upon each other's edits, and vandalized articles are quickly repaired by restoring an older version. In Wikipedia's second year, thousands of volunteer editors from around the world have added 80,000 entries to the English version and 33,000 more to the other language editions of Wikipedia. This surge in growth has made Wikipedia the world's largest and fastest growing open content encyclopedia...
One way of exploring this project is to see what is says about itself, a hypertext encyclopedia community . It can also be compared to other distributed information projects, such as Everything2 , weblogs , ThinkCycle , or the Encyclopedia of North Carolina project.

Virtual Community Makes Open Source Encyclopedia Succeed
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue8_12/ciffolilli/index.html

An open source encyclopedia seems to defy all logic. Anyone can contribute -- and anyone can change, deface or erase the information it contains. Yet Wikipedia is successful for several reasons. First, it's being constructed by a purpose-built virtual community, whose members share the same goals and passions. Another factor is the low cost associated with IT and virtual communities. In a way, technology has virtually eliminated transaction costs for editing and updating information. This not only stimulates development of the community and the project, it provides a full exploitation of massive collaboration economies. Another secret of Wikipedia's success is its "creative construction" of information, rather than a "creative destruction" of it. Initially, some observers expected an endless war among reliable contributions, as well as graffiti attacks that would deface and delay the development of the Web site. In reality, that hasn't happened. Every change made to every article is stored; unapproved modifications can be undone with a single click. Thus, hackers and graffiti artists waste more of their time and effort trying to litter a page than administrators require to correct it. Through this mechanism of editing and undoing meaningless changes or graffiti, an evolutionary process is fostered. Among other results, that means only the best contributions survive.

WHEN the ACT's 17-member Legislative Assembly last week passed an obscurely-named Bill it fundamentally changed the landscape of government software purchasing in Australia. Joining a number of jurisdictions worldwide — including several Brazilian cities — Australia's capital passed Democrats-sponsored legislation designed to give open source software a leg up. With the Democrats warning the ACT is just the beginning, opponents of open source and Linux, such as Microsoft, are starting to sweat.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

One frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla (keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?

Are you one of the few people with the time and money and expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the problem?

Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?

Zope Corp.'s layered strategy of engagement with open source and visible-source communities is a compelling blend of the strengths of free and commercial software development. In two previous columns, Open source citizenship and Giving back to open source, I explored the tendency of enterprises to fork open source projects rather than join them. Pedhazur suggests that a commercial entity supporting both an open source base and a visible-source layered product can reduce the need to fork. By outsourcing code enhancements, the argument goes, an enterprise can enjoy single-throat-to-choke control without seceding from a project's community. It remains to be seen how broadly this model can apply, but in cases where it does, what's not to like? [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
In this two-minute clip, Zope Corp.'s Chairman Hadar Pedhazur describes the visible source model as a middle-ground option between the few large open source projects, whose direction an enterprise cannot easily influence, and the many smaller ones that enterprises can influence, but typically fork in order to do so. ...

Prix Ars Electronica prizes announced

Prix Ars Electronica prizes announced 05/05/2004 08:10 AM

The winners of the Prix Ars Electronica have been announced.

I was on the Digital Communities jury this year for Ars Electronica. Thanks to the two jury pre-selection and final jury process, we were able to spend a lot of time on the 60 or so entries that were selected from hundreds of submissions by the first jury. We had an awesome jury. The final jury was me, Andreas Hirsch, Shanthi Kalathil (co-author of Open Networks, Closed Regimes: The Impact of the Internet on Authoritarian Rule), Jane Metcalfe (co-founder of Wired), Dorothy Okello (Coordinator of the Women of Uganda Network), Howard Rheingold (the Smart Mobs guy ;-) ) and Oliviero Toscani (The guy who made the controversial Benetton ads). We gave our two Golden Nica cash prizes to Wikipedia and The World Starts With Me. I'm sure everyone knows Wikipedia. The World Starts With Me is a project from Uganda.

"The World Starts With Me" is a sex education and AIDS prevention project that simultaneously gives young Ugandans the opportunity to acquire Internet and computer skills. The program is aimed at school children and young adults. To reach this target group, 52 "Telecenters" (facilities equipped with IT infrastructure including PCs with Internet access) have been set up throughout Uganda. The program focuses particularly on 12- to 19-year-olds, with the objective of improving their understanding of sexuality. The website features a very attractive, inviting design and takes a playful approach to mediating complicated content, which is presented in a way that enables young people to recognize situations confronting them personally in their everyday lives. This program is very popular in Uganda and is being used in many schools and institutions.
Now if only "The World Starts With Me" would make a wiki page...

Creative Commons won the Net Vision Golden Nica. Yay! (I wasn't involved in that jury and this was a pleasant surprise.)

Our honorary mentions were:

Prix Ars Electronica Digital Communities 02/05/2005 09:29 PM

I will be on the Prix Ars Electronica digital communities jury again next year. Please help us out by submitting work that you think meets the criteria below.

For the second time in 2005, Prix Ars Electronica will honor important achievements by digital communities. This category focuses attention on the wide-ranging social impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in the fields of social software, mobile communications and wireless networks.

The "Digital Communities" category is open to political, social, and cultural projects, initiatives, groups, and scenes from all over the world utilizing digital technology to better society and assume social responsibility. It is meant to recognize the initiators and propagators of these communities as well as the developers of the relevant technologies, and to honor those whose work contributes to the establishment and proliferation of Digital Communities as well as provide understanding and research into them.

The prizes in this category will total 20,000 Euros: one Golden Nica (10,000 Euro), two Awards of Distinction (5,000 Euros each) and up to 12 Honorary Mentions.
