Q&A: Microsoft Introduces Microsoft Data
Protection Server

Q&A: Microsoft Introduces Microsoft Data
Protection Server
09/20/2004 03:12 PM
For most companies, data backup and recovery is a significantly more pressing issue now than it was just a few years ago. A challenging economic climate, new regulatory mandates, and a greater concern about risks from major disasters, among other factors, are fueling this concern. Fortunately, rapidly declining disk prices are allowing enterprises to augment their data-protection strategies using disk-based backup and recovery technologies, which enable a faster, more manageable and more reliable solution than traditional tape-backup technology. But most of the current disk-based solutions on the market are still cost-prohibitive for many companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2003
05/27/2004 03:09 AM
The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

We’re not talking about just Windows Backup this time. This is Veritas worthy, Computer Associates ArcServe worthy. The time has come for Microsoft to say they will protect and serve our data without shuffling the DLTs, it’s about disk to disk. Microsoft thinks it’s darn near time we let the DLT and DAT tapes go into the dust bin, shove those huge heaping HP drives into the skip and whip out the real SATA deal….

Microsoft Patents Uploading Data

Microsoft Patents Uploading Data 08/10/2004 12:33 PM
theodp writes "Microsoft was granted a patent Tuesday for the Delayed Uploading of User Registration Data, which covers storing information collected from a user locally and transmitting it to a remote system once a connection is established." How is this possibly non-obvious to anyone with at least a tenth of a brain? Looks like more of the same where engineers are being pushed to patent anything, just because that's what companies do these days.

Microsoft’s PUMA to prevent theft of

03/14/2005 06:26 PM
At the end of April at the WinHEC 2005 developers´ conference Microsoft intends to furnish further details on the copy protection functions of the successor to Windows XP Longhorn, which is planned for 2006. The preliminary WinHEC 2005 Master List of Tracks and Sessions under the heading Media Advances for the Windows PC Architecture lists a number of events dealing with the form of control of use known as Digital Rights Management (DRM). One of these track sessions will, for instance, be concerned with the Protected Media Path (PMP), which is to be established for media data in Longhorn PCs.

A Protected Environment (PE), whilst providing a Protected Video Path (PVP) and Protected User Mode Audio (PUMA), will enforce defined requirements on hardware drivers (for TV or graphics cards, say). These channels are to be proof against data theft by rogue software. PUMA runs in the PE, with the PVP even encrypting data transfer to the graphics card over the PCI Express Port (AES 128). A PC´s outlets - in the case of video signals the outlet of the graphics card - are also integrated into the output protection management concept (OPM).

Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Windows server division at Microsoft, said customers had complained that backing up and recovering their data was currently labour-intensive and complex.
