The orange XML icon sucks

The orange XML icon sucks 06/16/2004 01:03 PM

I'm not a fan of the orange XML icon, even though I use it on my categories page. I love the concept of a universally recognised icon for RSS feeds, but XML is simply the wrong acronym to put on it. Don't think it's liable to cause confusion? Check out this excerpt from Journalism.co.uk (emphasis mine):

The Guardian is planning to launch more XML-based services in the next few months, adding to the news feed services the site already provides to both commercial clients and individual readers.

XML, also known as RSS, is a method of streaming information from a website. Many sites now offer a free XML feed enabling readers to receive headlines from news sites via a desktop software program. XML also avoids problems involved with sending email newsletters, such as junk mail and out-of-date addresses.

Doh!

Orange SPV C500 launches in UK

Orange SPV C500 launches in UK 08/16/2004 05:52 PM
<img src="http://www.neowin.net/staff/creamhackered/spvc500.gif" align="right">The smallest smartphone in the world has officially launched here in the UK today. However amongst all the fanfare and celebrations from people waiting for this phone, no-one can order it. Orange are experiencing technical problems on their databases resulting in their sales staff getting an "out of stock" message even though the phone launched today and the system alerts sales people that stocks are available. Orange has been experiencing a lot of technical problems recently following on from last weeks network outage for users of certain SIM cards.

As for the C500, it's a vast improvement on previous SPVs which have been lacking in battery life, call quality and good looks. The C500 takes smartphones in the right direction. Rumours are that the device has a battery standby of nearly 5 days which is a big improvement on the full charge per day of the E200. The C500 comes with the standard Bluetooth, infared, GPRS connections and Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. The device will also take mini SD cards and has 64mb onboard storage. We will be bringing you a full review of the SPV C500 as soon as Orange ship us a device to test. Keep your eyes peeled.
