African-American == Black?
African-American == Black?
01/23/2004 02:22 PM African-American == Black? Several high-school students at
a predominantly white (well, predominantly NOT black) Nebraska high
school were disciplined for a campaign to get 16-year-old student
Trevor Richards awarded the school's annual "Distinguished
African-American Student" award. Richards is from South Africa,
now lives in America (not sure if he's a citizen, the CNN story isn't
clear), but here's the catch: he's white.

A Salute to African Headwear. 'Many African cultures throughout
the continent have long considered the head the center of one's
being--a source of individual and collective identity, power,
intelligence and ability. Adorning the head as part of everyday attire
or as a statement, therefore, is especially significant. '

at MSU, and in partnership with premiere research institutions in
Africa, is pioneering the African Online Digital Library. The goal of
this fully accessible online digital repository is to adopt the
emerging best practices of the American digital library community and
apply them in an African context. AODL benefits a wide variety of
scholars, students, and institutions by producing multilingual,
multimedia materials for both scholarly research and public viewing
audiences. AODL serves scholars and students conducting research and
teaching about West and South Africa as well as teachers and students
of African languages in both the United States and Africa. It also
provides a valuable model for creating and distributing a diverse
array of materials in a region with very limited electronic

Hotel Rwanda, the African Schindler's
List
03/17/2005 03:24 AMWe're just back from seeing the movie Hotel Rwanda at the Angelika
in Greenwich Village. The (true) story is about a Belgian-owned
hotel in Rwanda where about 1000 people take refuge from the mass
slaughter of Rwanda's 1994 civil war. As with Schindler's List
there is a background of killing but hardly any of the people featured
in the movie are killed. Perhaps this is the only way to make a
commercially successful movie about genocide.
[Note to business folks who might be thinking of investing in
Africa... the one person in the docudrama who was both competent
and honest emigrated to Belgium. This was a sad echo of Paul
Theroux's Dark Star Safari travelogue in which any African who
developed the skills necessary to help Africa immediately emigrated to
Europe.]
