Google Inc. yesterday announced it expanded the breadth of its web index to more than 6 billion items. This innovation represents a milestone for Internet users, enabling quick and easy access to the world's largest collection of online information. "People worldwide can find more information with Google than with any other search engine," said Larry Page, Google co-founder and president of Products. Google's collection of 6 billion items comprises 4.28 billion web pages, 880 million images, 845 million Usenet messages, and a growing collection of book-related information pages.

Trial date set in JPEG patent case 02/05/2005 10:11 PM
A trial date has been set in a major patent infringement case involving 41 major hardware and software vendors, including Apple and Dell, and a company claiming the rights to an algorithm used in the JPEG picture file format. Austin-based Forgent Networks Inc. and its wholly-owned subsidiary Compression Labs Inc. are suing 41 companies for allegedly infringing on the JPEG-related patent for digital image compression. The patent has garnered about $100 million for Forgent in licensing fees during the past three years. In use since the mid-1980s, the JPEG, or Joint Photographic Experts Group, format has become standard for sharing photo-quality images electronically. Although the most widely used version of the format is in the public domain, Forgent said it believes that a 17-year-old patent it acquired through the purchase of Compression Labs in 1997 can be applied to a specific algorithm in the format. According to the Austin Business Journal, pre-trial proceedings are scheduled to start April 28 in East Texas, with a jury trial to begin in October. News of the trial date this morning sent stock for Forgent Networks Inc. soaring to a 34 percent increase to $2.75 per share.

The Sunbird Project - Standalone Calendar: Since they can't use "Firebird," Sunbird was the next best thing, I suppose.

The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language. At the moment the "Sunbird" name is a project name. It is not official and may change in the future.

The screenshots look good.

Daniel Dennett: Semantic Engineer

Daniel Dennett: Semantic Engineer 04/19/2004 01:49 PM
The Guardian has published an interesting article on philosopher Daniel Dennett, a proponent of machine consciousness. The article covers a wide range of topics ranging from the beliefs of thermostats, to whether or not Gödel's theorem proves machines will never be able to think. His ideas on the development of beliefs in simple organisms to consciousness in humans sound similar to those of the seemingly forgotten Alfred Korzybski. One other note of interest: Mr Dennett is looking for the builder of a robot dog from the 1950s that he obtained in Paris. Check the photos at the bottom of his home page and let him know if you can identify it.
