VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband?

VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband? 01/04/2005 05:40 PM
While many telcos are somewhat dreading how VoIP will cut into their cash cow voice revenue, some are suggesting telcos need to take a radically different view of VoIP. The key ingredient, though, is realizing they're not telcos, but broadband providers (something Verizon has said -- but it's not clear if they fully realize this yet). Then, VoIP can act as a trojan horse for broadband. The thinking is that nearly all of telco customers have voice service, but a small percentage get broadband from them (if they get it from anyone). However, if telcos offered to swap out regular phone service for VoIP without the corresponding internet service, they would also have the data service ready to go if the customer ever wanted it. That is, it's easier to convince people just to switch from a traditional phone line to VoIP (especially since its cheaper) than to convince them to sign up for broadband and VoIP. Basically, they'd be offering a broadband offering that isn't an internet service -- just for VoIP. However, everything would be set up for internet and other services, so if a user wanted to switch on the ISP side, they could do so with a single request, rather than any installation work. It's certainly an interesting approach, but it's not likely that the telcos will move in this direction any time soon.

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps 02/01/2005 08:35 PM

Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile apps need mobile devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one or two slots for application cartridges.  Each cartridge contains one or more applications.  Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the phone app as well as others.

Adding a cartridge adds new apps.  Applications have two modes: running and stopped.  The Next-App button (aka Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in turn.  Some apps can activate itself when an event fires (phone call received).  To see the list of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.

Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform cartridges, taking over the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better application platform services than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app download service that auto-configures apps for your device).  If you don't like the built-in calender, just stop it and run a third-party calendar instead.

VoIP Might Be

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.

The Next Mobile Killer App

The Next Mobile Killer App 02/01/2005 08:35 PM

The first killer-app for mobiles is the phone calls.  I believe static downloadable audio contents such as music, audio books, and podcasts will be the next killer-app. Only design problem is sharing one battery for both critical (phone calls) and casual (listening to audio) uses which calls for smarter power management and more powerful batteries.

Great user experience and clever hardware design is where Apple excels at so I expect Apple to introduce iPod phones within a year or two at the latest.

Unfortunately, screen-based applications and dynamic audio contents, driven by voice browser technologies, will continue to struggle in the near future due to tedious user experience.  Mobile killer apps must be available at the user's fingertip, not hidden behind a wall of patience.

You could even hook it up to your TV to play back the video if you, you know, lived in Japan and got cool new phones like this every month. Since the D900i is a FOMA i-mode phone, it can browse the web, render Flash movies, and (even though not all the FOMA phones have this) can save extra data on Memory Stick Duo cards.

900iG_nec.jpg imageNTT DoCoMo has released the NEC 900iG, a dual-mode FOMA W-CDMA 3G and standard GSM phone. Not means not only will the phone be able to take advantage of all the high-speed infrastructure in Japan, but will be able to roam throughout the rest of the world with relative compatibility. Engadget said it might be heading stateside, which would be just fine—its 1.2-megapixel camera would be welcome, at the very least—but it seems like an odd choice, expect for those that do a lot of roaming back into W-CDMA markets. Maybe Cingular (or whoever deploys W-CDMA first here next year) will pick it up. For now, it's released for our Japanese friends.
