Seeing the Brain Seeing
Seeing the Brain Seeing
02/01/2005 10:04 PMScientists at Harvard's Reid Lab
have captured video
of the visual cortex in cat and rat brains processing
visual stimuli.
The animals were shown several moving test patterns consisting of
alternating black and white lines. The resulting neural activation
patterns were revealed using a dye
that glows differently based on calcium levels, which change when a
neuron activates. R. Clay
Reid and the other researchers involved hope the new technique can
be used to gain a better understanding of the brain's functional
micro-architecture, revealing the relationship between where neurons
are
and what they do. For a bit more on the subject see a recent CNET
story on the research. And if you want the real details, see the
Reid researcher's recent paper describing the technique, "Functional
Imaging with Cellular Resolution Reveals Precise Micro-architecture in
Visual Cortex" (PDF format). Neither article mentions how the 19-40
day old kittens felt about having craniotomies for science or if they
survived the procedure

Jackie and the Brain
Jackie and the Brain
06/17/2005 04:32 PMJackie was a very simple computer program that simulated half of a
human conversation which I wrote in Visual Basic in December of 1994
as an entry for the 1995 Loebner Prize. At her heart was a look up
table that was built up by having numerous people interact with her
converstaionally. The look up table consisted of a stimulus, a
response and a number of supplementary indexes to the stimulus. The
key to Jackie's heart, and her uniqueness, were her supplemental
indexes.

Understanding the Brain
06/07/2004 08:38 PMThe Nobel-prize-winning Cambridge theoretical physicist Brian
Josephson has
released a short paper titled, How we might
be able to Understand the Brain (PDF format). In it he proposes an
abstract framework upon which unified theories of the brain could
be built. This would replace the current piecemeal manner of studying
and theorizing about particular mechanism or aspects of the brain in
isolation. Josephson has also suggested
that the study of the brain is tied to the study of abstraction in
general.

it's different, and interesting to see how people adapt when a large
component of their brain is outside of their body.
