Seeing the Brain Seeing

Seeing the Brain Seeing 02/01/2005 10:04 PM
Scientists at Harvard's Reid Lab have captured video of the visual cortex in cat and rat brains processing visual stimuli. The animals were shown several moving test patterns consisting of alternating black and white lines. The resulting neural activation patterns were revealed using a dye that glows differently based on calcium levels, which change when a neuron activates. R. Clay Reid and the other researchers involved hope the new technique can be used to gain a better understanding of the brain's functional micro-architecture, revealing the relationship between where neurons are and what they do. For a bit more on the subject see a recent CNET story on the research. And if you want the real details, see the Reid researcher's recent paper describing the technique, "Functional Imaging with Cellular Resolution Reveals Precise Micro-architecture in Visual Cortex" (PDF format). Neither article mentions how the 19-40 day old kittens felt about having craniotomies for science or if they survived the procedure - ouch!

It would be a quad 19Ghz monster, capable of processing massive amounts of data. At least sometimes It feels like that. Although, I don't think It ever goes much faster than 5Ghz (!). There is one day I definitely don't feel like that. Monday. Monday is so tiring, so long, so unwanted. After a long weekend I've got to get up early, and get on with life. My brain feels like a overclocked 1Mhz chip with no cache, no RAM, and a 2MB HD (that is going to die)! Tuesday isn't so hot either ;-)

Jackie and the Brain

Jackie and the Brain 06/17/2005 04:32 PM
Jackie was a very simple computer program that simulated half of a human conversation which I wrote in Visual Basic in December of 1994 as an entry for the 1995 Loebner Prize. At her heart was a look up table that was built up by having numerous people interact with her converstaionally. The look up table consisted of a stimulus, a response and a number of supplementary indexes to the stimulus. The key to Jackie's heart, and her uniqueness, were her supplemental indexes.

Brain fingerprinting

Brain fingerprinting 02/18/2004 10:38 PM
Brain fingerprinting is about to take centre stage in a last-chance court appeal against a death-row conviction in the US." The technology was developed by Dr. Lawrence Farwell, one of Time Magazine's "100 Innovators who may be the Picassos or Einsteins of the 21st century." Is this a positive development for humankind (after all, it may clear innocent accused of their alleged crimes, or uncover dangerous terrorists), or is it yet another scary advancement in the government's encroachm ent on our privacy ? I personally think Philip K. Dick, author of "Minori ty Report" may have been more of a prophet than we ever knew. (See this link as well).

Understanding the Brain

Understanding the Brain 06/07/2004 08:38 PM
The Nobel-prize-winning Cambridge theoretical physicist Brian Josephson has released a short paper titled, How we might be able to Understand the Brain (PDF format). In it he proposes an abstract framework upon which unified theories of the brain could be built. This would replace the current piecemeal manner of studying and theorizing about particular mechanism or aspects of the brain in isolation. Josephson has also suggested that the study of the brain is tied to the study of abstraction in general.

My Other Brain Is Powered By Silicon... 08/02/2004 01:39 PM
A short piece at CNN examines how younger people today now seem to c onsider computers and the internet as real extensions of their "carbon" brains. Without a laptop and an internet connection, it's as if they're working at a disadvantage. The article isn't suggesting this is a bad thing (as some might assume), but rather that it's different, and interesting to see how people adapt when a large component of their brain is outside of their body.
