HTML Utopia -- Designing Without Tables

HTML Utopia -- Designing Without Tables 06/27/2002 02:08 AM
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a site that really inspired me. It was beautifully designed and presented. It was not until I looked at the code behind it that my heart truly skipped a beat. The site was A List Apart, the brain child of Jeffrey Zeldman. Zeldman is also involved in WaSP - The WEB STANDARDS PROJECT that launched the browser upgrade campaign. The campaign encourages Users to upgrade to browsers that meet WC3 recommendations and lobbies the browser developers to build browsers that comply more thoroughly. I decided to have a crack at rebuilding a SitePoint page without using any tables (currently there are 18 tables being used, 17 of which are unnecessary). -- Julian Carroll

What do Flickr, Google Suggest, Google Maps, and GMail have in common? They all employ some of the latest methods in modern, unobtrusive DHTML. In the first four chapters from his new book, 'DHTML Utopia: Modern Web Design Using JavaScript and DOM', Stuart introduces the basics of DHTML and DOM, then kicks off the script-fest as he handles DOM events and explores browser sniffing techniques.

Building Accessible HTML Tables for the

Building Accessible HTML Tables for the
Disabled
10/01/2002 12:25 PM
Blind and other severely vision impaired users rely on assistive technologies to render web content. All text can be fed through a screen reader or refreshable braille display to be presented to the user. However, despite containing text, the table above could make a real mess of things without a few extra behind the scenes accessibility enhancements. To an assistive browser our table could well look like this:
Time Planned Task Preferred Task What I actually did
10 - 12 Catch up on replying to my emails. Have a lie in. Surfed
aimlessly.
12-1 Have Lunch. Have Lunch. Had Breakfast.
1-5 Finish that project. Go to video store. Caught up on my emails.

Ok, we can still kind of make a little sense of it. That is because we can see it. A blind user can't easily scan back up and check what the third piece of information relates to. Was it what I actually did, or what I would have preferred to do? This is why we need to create relationships within the code of our table. Thankfully, from HTML4.0 a bucketful of accessibility enhancements were introduced to enable the conscientious developer to do this. -- Tim Roberts

Limits of technology

Limits of technology 07/05/2004 12:40 PM
Even with our seemingly limitless ingenuity, technology can only go so far. We can be disembodied voices across half of the world with just a few buttons; we can send letters to faraway lands in less time than it took for the Victorian mailman to mount his horse; we can even see what is happening in distant places; huge machines can fling us across the sky. "Connecting people" says one company.

But seeing someone on your screen is not the same as touching her hair.

Hearing someone's voice is not the same as a gentle kiss.

Laughing with her in chat is not the same as a tight embrace.

Even with all our advances, there are still things to be said about physical presence. Many beautiful things.

The Limits of Artificial Intelligence 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
A new ACM Ubiquity article addresses what the author, Alexandru Tugui, believes are limitations of artificial intelligence that cannot be overcome. The article is primarily concered with AI as a simulation of biological intelligence rather than with the creation of real machine intelligence. Even so, some of his objections seem a bit odd, such as the claim that AI can never truly simulate biological intelligence because it is limited to 1s and 0s whereas biological intelligence can have intermediate values. A CD player is a computer that deals only with 1s and 0s, yet it seems to simulate analog music quite easily.

I finally acknowledge my limits

I finally acknowledge my limits 04/05/2005 01:50 PM
When I decided to run the Paris Marathon last fall, I did so for two main reasons: I was all hopped up on the running junk after the NYC Marathon and wanted to try another and wanted to try and go faster, and I wanted an excuse to go to Paris. As the fall turned into winter though, I found I was less psyched for running. I turned my attention to skiing and, whether from exhaustion or lack of training, or over-training, or who knows, I found that whenever I did run, I had a bad run. I never felt good, either during the jog or after. I know for many people that's always the case, but for me running is usually something that makes me feel better; it gives me a real boost. The more this happened, the more I dreaded my runs. The more I dreaded, the less I ran, until the cycle fed upon itself, culminating in a very difficult and long Brooklyn Half-Marathon last month. I told myself it was because I was tired (true) and that once I got some rest, I'd have great runs again (false). That hasn't been the case, and though I thought I'd "turn around" here in Paris, I haven't. I dreaded running from the moment I got here, and I was seriously beginning to dread 26.2 miles of Paris Marathon on April 10th. So I decided a couple days ago that I wouldn't run the marathon. And just like that, the anxiety lifted. I'm not a good quitter, and it was *really* hard for me to allow myself to make this decision. In fact I can't recall a time where I've ever done something like this before. I'm pretty confident I could have finished the marathon, because I'm obstinate and can push through all kinds of nearly-incapacitating physical pain (thanks Tufts Crew!) but it seemed rather perverse to do something when clearly my body repeatedly was telling me not to. More importantly, I want to love running. It's something that -- not to sound too overly dramatic but its true -- has really sustained me during some very difficult dark periods of my life. And I didn't want to lose that. So I'm back to running for fun, and I'm looking forward to a some spring and summer fun races, where I hope to get the good feelings back and find the love again. I'll still be out there on Sunday, but I'll be cheering instead of perspiring. I'll be offering encouragement because I know what it's like to put in all the training and see it pay off on the big day, and the feeling that gives you. I've run 26.2 miles before, and I'll do it again. But I just won't do it this Sunday. And that's OK.
