critical
02/18/2004 05:57 AM

Microsoft released its "first Tuesday" patch bundle last week, and one of the included patches could be the most critical in a long time. It affects every Windows operating system beginning with Windows NT 4 right up through Windows Server 2003. The patch is to correct a problem that would allow a malicious person to take over control of a computer remotely.

Microsoft released a "critical" fix on Thursday for a security issue left unresolved by the Windows XP Service Pack 2. The configuration change closed a hole in the Windows firewall settings that could open up PCs to attack if the machines had been set to share files or a printer with the local network, said Gary Schare, director of product management for Windows.

Lots of you did download it and use it successfully. Now it's time to upgrade.

Security Experts to Microsoft: SP2 Has
Critical Flaws

Security Experts to Microsoft: SP2 Has
Critical Flaws
08/20/2004 06:23 AM
German Internet security experts Heise Security have discovered what it calls two "flaws" in Service Pack 2. Microsoft has said its Service Pack 2 offers users the latest security "innovations," but Internet security experts said hackers could exploit cracks in SP2 defences to exploit a user's computer.

According to Heise Security, "Computer hackers could evade SP2's new security features and infect a computer that uses Windows with a virus or a worm." Heise further explains that Windows also does not source information properly if files are overwritten so that it can "be tricked to execute files from the Internet" without sparking a warning, even if users install the new SP2 update.

A Microsoft spokesperson addressed the warning by saying, "Microsoft has investigated these reports and is not aware of any instance in which an attacker could specifically bypass the service in email or a Web browser to allow a malicious attacker access to a user's system. We continue to encourage customers to review and install Windows XP SP2."

CES Kills Comdex

CES Kills Comdex 06/23/2004 03:40 PM
For years, people have pointed out that Comdex just doesn't have the same pull it used to. Many people thought that there wouldn't be a Comdex last year after its parent company, Key3Media went bankrupt and other, competing shows, jumped in to take its place. The show still happened, though without much interest. Apparently, the interest is even less this year, and there will be no Comdex this year. They claim that it will come back the following year, but I wouldn't bet too much money on that happening. In the meantime, everyone had already shifted their Las Vegas conference travel plans to January's CES anyway, so it's unlikely this will actually impact anyone.
