An article on SecurityFocus led me to this site about Port Knocking. Port Knocking is an interesting security technique in which a box sits online with no ports open to connections and awaits a specific sequence of connection attempts. A user wishing to connect to the box must first attempt to initiate connections to ports in a specific, secret order. Once they do, the box starts up the required service (such as an SSH daemon) on a designated port and allows the user to connect properly.

It's a pretty neat trick, and one that may well start showing up in backdoors and trojans in the future. It reminds me of a couple of other novel firewall related tricks: invisible firewalls and firewalls that are effectively turned off.

In this project Filippo Menczer and his researchers study the relationships between different types of Web topology based for example on hyperlinks, words, and page meaning, and how they affect the performance of ranking and crawling algorithms, such as InfoSpiders. This research extends prior work in which they characterized a necessary condition for effective autonomous browsing of any distributed hypertext database such as the Web in terms of a relevance autocorrelation measure. More recently they have used a brute force approach to map the relationships between lexical, linkage, and semantic similarity across billions of Web page pairs. This research is being applied to build models that may help understand how the scale-free distribution of Web links has emerged and how it can be exploited for designing more effective Web crawlers and search engines. Bruce Schneier's latest op-ed asks us to consider the warrant process -- where a cop has to show evidence and follow procedure before invading your privacy -- is itself a security measure.

What we need are corresponding mechanisms to prevent abuse. This is the proper question: "Should we allow law enforcement to use new technology without any judicial oversight, or should we demand that they be overseen and accountable?" And the Fourth Amendment already provides for this in its requirement of a warrant.

The search warrant - a technologically neutral legal requirement - basically says that before the police open the mail, listen in on the phone call or search the bit stream for key words, a "neutral and detached magistrate" reviews the basis for the search and takes responsibility for the outcome. The key is independent judicial oversight; the warrant process is itself a security measure protecting us from abuse and making us more secure.
