What Jews think

What Jews think 01/25/2004 09:30 AM
Hanan Cohen sends along a link to the American Jewish Committee's 2003 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion. The sample of 1,000 self-identified Jews, a representative cross-section of Americans, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 points. 76% of us think caring about Israel is a very important part of being a Jew. Only 5% are more positive this year than last about the chance for peace. 81% of us think ""The goal of the Arabs is not the return of occupied territories but rather the destruction of Israel," but 54% support the creation of a Palestinian...

Kurds are the Closest Relatives of Jews

Kurds are the Closest Relatives of Jews 12/29/2004 08:16 PM
Kurds are the Closest Relatives of Jews Funny, They don't look Jewish:"Research has just begun into the ancient ties between Kurds and Jews. It would be interesting to see if the various Jewish groups have as strong a family tie to Kurds in the maternal lineages as they do in the paternal lineages. Preliminary studies indicate that Jewish populations in eastern Europe and Yemen have maternal origins that contain much more non-Israelite ancestry than their paternal origins. Despite this admixture with other groups, the Jewish Judean people ultimately began their existence in an area within or nearby Kurdistan, prior to migrating southwest to Israel. This exciting research showing that Kurds and Jews may have shared common fathers several millennia ago should, hopefully, encourage both Kurds and Jews to explore each others' cultures and to maintain the friendship that Kurds and Jews enjoyed in northern Iraq in recent times (as chronicled in Michael Rubin's recent article "The Other Iraq"). As Rubin indicates, the Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani once visited Israel and met with Israeli government officials. Rubin refers to the Iraqi Kurds' "special affinity for Israel" and writes that "In the safe haven of Iraqi Kurdistan, the Jews and Israel are remembered fondly, if increasingly vaguely." Let us hope that this relationship can be renewed and strengthened."

Latest Philip Roth novel: Aviation and
Jews

Latest Philip Roth novel: Aviation and
Jews
12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Just finished Philip Roth's latest novel, Th e Plot Against America, a worthy addition to any Jewish pilot's bookshelf.  Roth concentrates on his usual terrain of Newark, NJ Jewish family life.  This time the background is an America in which Charles Lindbergh has beaten FDR in the 1940 presidential election.  Lindbergh proceeds to negotiate deals with Japan and Germany rather than enter World War II and the federal government initiates some programs designed to disperse Jews from their traditional neighborhoods in places such as Newark out into the American heartland, e.g., rural Kentucky.

A lame ending and not as good as Am erican Pastoral, for which Roth won the Pulitzer, but a lot better than Roth's early novels and worth a try even if you were at some point forced to read Portnoy's Complaint.

George W.'s re-inauguration: a day of
celebration for Jews and gynecologists
02/01/2005 09:38 PM

As George W. is sworn in today for a second term, it occurs to me how grateful American Jews should be that he won.  For those Americans, of whom there are a fair number (see my Israel Essay for statistics), who believe that Jews have too much political power and, in particular, that Jewish Wall Street financiers control American politics behind the scenes, imagine what feelings a Kerry victory would have provoked.  We had an anti-gun candidate who had presented himself to voters for decades as Irish-American but was in fact one-quarter Jewish.  A majority of American Jews voted for this candidate, who was also supported with massive funds from George Soros, a Jewish baron of Wall Street, resulting in Kerry and Democratic "527 committees" spending $292 million during the campaign (versus $113 million on the Republican side, according to www.publicintegrity.org).&nb sp; If it were Kerry being sworn in today that would have confirmed everything that a lot of folks believe about a Jewish conspiracy controlling American politics.

One group that does seem to be celebrating today are America's gynecologists.  My aviation habit has thrown me into contact with a lot of ob-gyns, none of whom have shed a tear over the defeat of John Edwards, the Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, who made much of his money suing ob-gyns for cerebral palsy cases.

Ukranian cave system that hid Jews from

Ukranian cave system that hid Jews from
Nazis for nearly a year
07/22/2004 12:52 AM
This is an incredible National Geographic piece on the exploration of the Priest's Grotto, a cave system in the Ukraine where 38 Jews hid from the Nazis for nearly a year.
Once inside, Nicola marveled at not only the remarkable natural features of the cave but signs of human presence, including walls and old shoes and walls made of stones...

"It's amazing," Nicola told National Geographic News. "When I go into a cave I have special boots, because an ankle sprain deep in a cave could be serious business. I have special wicking underwear, so I don't get hypothermia, a special suit, special gloves for gripping things. I have three independent light sources—that's a standard rule. This is all for a day trip into a cave, and yet this is a situation where average people lived here for nearly a year."...

Mel Gibson, the Jews, Haiti, and blaming
it all on people who died 175 years ago
03/08/2004 11:03 PM

People are blaming all of the Jew-hatred in Mel Gibson's new movie on the visions of a German nun, Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824).  According to this article from Newsday:

The bedridden visionary, who is said to have borne the stigmata and the wounds of the crown of thorns, is a particular source of contention for Gibson because of her depictions of Jews as bloodthirsty and venal. In The Dolorous Passion, for instance, she "sees" Jewish priests passing out bribes to get people to offer false testimony against Jesus and even tipping the Roman executioners. She also describes seeing Jesus' cross being built in the courtyard of the Temple in Jerusalem.

And Emmerich's 19th-century biographer, the Rev. C.E. Schmoe'ger, wrote about how she had one vision of an "old Jewess Meyr," who confessed to her "that Jews in our country and elsewhere strangled Christian children and used their blood for all sorts of suspicious and diabolical practices."

Gibson, who carries a relic of Emmerich in the form of a faded piece of cloth from her habit, vehemently rejects characterizations of the nun as anti-Semitic.

In other news... I was listening to NPR news a couple of days ago.  All of Haiti's current troubles were being blamed on things that the French did in 1825 and this proposition was discussed seriously for 15 minutes.  Haiti does seem to be in rather tough shape, at least going by the CIA Factbook page:

"About 80% of the population lives in abject poverty.  ... The economy shrank an estimated 1.2% in 2001 and an estimated 0.9% in 2002.  Literacy rate is 53%."

Despite an HIV infection rate of 6.1% and a lot of deaths from AIDS the population is still growing at an annual rate of 1.67%, i.e., there are an ever-increasing number of Haitians to share an ever-smaller pie.  (cf. Malthus)

Perhaps there are more problems in our world of 2004 that can be blamed on those French and Germans who died circa 1825...  Anyone care to suggest some dead Europeans to blame in the comments section?

Paolo Valdemarin: "After September 11 the US were leading the largest coalition of countries ever seen. Now, whatever the US administration is saying, they are going to a war alone." Actually the British are fighting with the US.

Lance Knobel: "I'd like to have seen an alternative to war, but that would have meant an international commitment to intrusive inspections, backed by the threat of force. In the light of French and Russian vacillation, it's very unclear whether that could have worked."

Megnut: "I'm uncomfortable with the idea of America unilaterally removing someone from power. And I am very disturbed by the approach the American government has taken to achieve its goals."

Karlin Lillington: "The Bush administration has been utterly hopeless and inept in creating a coalition abroad, in showing leadership overseas, in working towards consensus."

Commentary: Where is Java in the
settlement?
04/12/2004 06:04 AM
Editor's note: Our colleague, Javalobby founder Rick Ross, has graciously allowed NewsForge to reprint his column from this week's special edition of the Javalobby newsletter. It makes an excellent package with Richard Stallman's essay on "Free but shackled: The Java trap." I can neither endorse nor denounce the Sun/Microsoft settlement at this point. Those of us on the outside have no access to the particulars of the settlement and have no way to know whether Sun has sold us out. In truth, precious little of the corporate messaging has specifically referenced Java. It would be nice to paint a positive picture, but experience has proven that we shouldn't be too quick to believe what corporations convey in their highly managed dog-and-pony shows.
